I stumbled after Bonnie as she dragged me through the crowd of clamouring people. "I don't understand why I'm here Bon." I exclaimed as I bumped shoulders with too many people. "Because Connie couldn't make it and you were guaranteed to want to see this, plus Buck promised me a date and he's all yours." I rolled my eyes as I stated for the millionth time that evening, "I'm not here for a date, I'm here to see the future." Bonnie grumbled, "Potato, potarto." My eyes fell upon the glowing sign 'Modern Marvels Pavilion' and my heart swelled with pride, the future will be amazing.
"Come on Vic what are you doing?!" I mumbled an apology as I caught up to Bonnie. "Hey Bon, I thought you were bringing Connie?" Someone asked from behind us. His voice captured all my attention, it sounded smooth and reminded me of a wood fire and warm cocoa. I spun on my heels a soft smile on my face as I took in who I can only assume was Bucky. "Nice to meet you, I'm Victoria." I clarified, my hand outstretched. "I don't shake hands with beautiful dames doll." Bucky stated as he pulled me in under his arm, beaming down at me. "Sergeant James Barnes", he stated, "and this is Steve." James motioned to the small man by his side. I offered him a polite smile as I registered that Bonnie was disappointed with his appearance, "Great to meet you."
Suddenly music boomed through the pavilion and with a giddy smile I dragged Bucky by the hand towards the stage. "Ladies and gentlemen, Mr Howard Stark." Howard being his usual self, kissed the announcer on the cheek as he ran onto the stage. The crowd erupted at the sight of the genius in front of them, but I simply admired seeing him where he thrives. Howard caught my gaze and nodded slightly at me, acknowledging the presence of a friend, I nodded back. Addressing the audience, Howard began his speech; "Ladies and gentlemen, what if I told you that in just a few short years, your automobile won't even have to touch the ground at all." The girls removed the wheels from the car as Howard thanked them. "With Stark robotic reversion technology, you'll be able to do just that." He turned on the switch of the machine and my body tensed, Stark had been working on this for months. The car hovered above the ground. I heard James mutter a soft, "Holy cow", as he marvelled at the brilliance before him. Although as quickly as it began the technology making the car hover began to malfunction. Stark looked at me in fear as subtly motioned for him to shut it down. "I did say a few years, didn't I?" He chuckled, quickly making light of the situation.
I noticed Steve walk away out of the corner of my eye, my skills making me hyper aware of my surroundings. Bucky clearly noticed as he let go of my hand and followed after Steve. I turned and followed the pair, thinking that if I was a good judge of character, Steve was definitely going to do something Bucky didn't want. By the time I caught up to the two I heard James exclaim, "As who? Steve from Ohio? They'll catch you. Or worse, they'll actually take you." James clearly cared deeply for Steve and my mind raced with possibilities. I rushed into the recruitment centre searching for one man and one man only. "Evening schatz, I did not think I would be seeing you." I heard the Doctor say from the door way. "Dr Erskine, a small man will come in here looking for recruitment, he's the perfect candidate. I can't stay but make sure he sees you. Enlist him, please." I begged, I knew in my heart that Steve was perfect for the Project. I left as Erskine shouted back, "You're lucky you don't ask for much!"
I stepped back into the crowd and noticed Bucky looking defeated. "Hey, Sarge! Are we going dancing?" Connie pleaded. I rolled my eyes, dreading the thought of dancing all night. James turned to us as he confirmed Connie's idea, he then turned to Steve and told him not to do anything stupid until he gets back. To which Steve replied, "How can I? You're taking all the stupid with you." The pair bantered a little more and then James turned to leave, "I'll be two minutes James, I want to talk to Steve." Bucky gave me a confused look but waited nonetheless. I grabbed Steve by the arm and whispered into his ear, "Trust me Steve, you'll be safe with us." "Who's us?" He asked, "You'll see, the Doctor will help you." I smiled and left with James.
"You good to go doll?" He questioned. I smiled up at him again, "Peachy."
