He walks with a swagger all his own,
Not like the boys say, with their overused ‘swag,’
But with a careless sort of confidence,
I just can’t look away.

I’m not sure if you understand.
I still like you a lot more than I want to,
But I’m learning to like myself as much as I should,
And that’s why this isn’t about you.

Remember that if your presence doesn’t warrant a ‘hello’, neither does his.

I can’t claim to know you better than most,
But I know how much better you could be,
And I’m not sure anyone else sees.
You don’t seem to infuriate those other girls,
Only strangers to you tell me I can do better,
And so it doesn’t surprise me that I see your flaws so clearly,
Because a year ago we were strangers, too.
Sometimes you still seem like one,
When you’re ignorant you make me apologize,
But I see so much potential in your faults.
I can’t claim to know you better than most,
But I know how much better you could be.

 I did good today.
I remembered to breathe, and I was brave,
So I decided to reward myself with pits in my stomach,
And staring at the boy I like too long,
And I took that heart ache,
Because I did good today.

Well, don’t you think this is how it’s meant to be? Conversation and unseen smiles, with a sense of wistful peacefulness that lasts longer than you’d expect. Like a pair of lovers reading letters by candlelight, the only light in the room is a mix of moonlight and my cellphone screen, but I think I have the charmed smile down. No anger, no tears, no confusion, just a few words spinning in cyberspace, since you would never have time to put a pen to paper. But I still feel like this is how it’s meant to be; I don’t want to say goodnight, but it’s a perfect way to fall asleep.
