Liu Yang's pov:
Liu Yang never felt comfortable anywhere that was too quiet. A place devoid of people and noise was like being trapped in her own mind with her thoughts. Her late shifu (it's been so long since he's thought about him) was always exasperated with her energetic behaviour.
But that was years ago, too. Now, Liu Yang is quite thankful for the peace and quiet. Although the silence in Hanshi, much like in the Orchid Room, was filled with tension.
Zewu Jun served her tea, before serving himself. She didn't touch the cup. She had been served tea all day, everyday. Frankly, she was getting sick of the bland taste. Imagine that, being sick of tea. That's like being sick of breathing!
Xichen hummed a tune as he arranged the papers on the table in front of him. He didn't look up, not even to glance at her to see if she was still there.
Liu Yang frowned and clenched her robes in her hands. She wants to disturb the silence, dread prickling her skin. For an unknown reason, she feels that a monster will pounce on her if she's not careful.
Lan Xichen is stalling. She knows he is. Why? She wants to demand him for an answer. Her day has gone long enough.
She just wants to find Chen Jun a sect that would be willing to take him in, or a wealthy family if it's her last resort, and then distance herself from civilisation. She will stay away for a decade or two, until every person has forgotten her.
With Xichen's status and also strength and cultivation level, she could do nothing but wait. But feeling gutsy, she asks, "Why did you ask me to come here?"
Xichen's eyes slowly draw to her and she feels as if he's doing this on purpose. He smiles, the kind where you want to deliver bad news but still want to put the person at ease, "Is it wrong that I wish to spend my time with a friend?"
Liu Yang resists the urge to roll her eyes. Her? His friend? A nobody. A failure. A bad luck charm. A-- She wonders, for a moment, when she had become so pessimistic. She was able to smile before, right? Who is she anymore?
(Asks the author who realised that their MC is very out of character)
Anyhow, "Not if there's some ulterior motive." She says. Xichen's expression turns amused and he ducks his head slightly as if to show that he is embarassed that he has been caught.
Xichen's face is serious: "I invited you here because I wanted to talk to you. I noticed that you have been unusually quiet. Brother-in-law has even pointed it out to me. I am just worried."
Then, a smile breaks onto his face (and Liu Yang wonders if that is just his face in its neutral setting). "I saw your expression when you talked with Chen Jun. It was angry and tired but guilt-ridden. You didn't want to leave him."
"Only the thing is, I don't quite understand your reason for thinking that you have to leave him. What makes you so sure that he'll be safer away from you? I understand you might have your concerns with you being a rogue cultivator; but your golden core is strong enough and I believe that you will still be able to--"
"It's not that." Liu Yang interjected, feeling annoyed that he still doesn't understand.
Xichen stops mid-sentence and purses his lips, though his eyes are still kind. Liu Yang groans and leans forward on the table. Her palms press into her eyes and she sighs, "...I'm so tired..." Xichen flinches a little, she sounds so old and worn.
Liu Yang: "I appreciate your concern, ZeWu Jun... but I can't take in Ah-Chen and have him live the same lifestyle as mine..."
Xichen: "And why is that Liu Yang?"
Liu Yang almost considers saying 'It's better for him this way' but apparently people don't like it when she's all cryptid. "It--it's because I..." she stares at Zewu Jun, tears spilling from her eyes, "...I'm bad luck."
