Narrator's Pov:

Many years ago...

"You good for nothing waste of breath!" Madam Gāo slapped the servant who spilled the tray of tea onto her silk dress, knocking the servant onto the ground with the sheer force of the slap.

The servant dared not cry out in pain, even as he frantically cleaned up the mess and apologised excessively. After cleaning up the mess, the servant threw himself to his Madam's feet.

"Madam! I'm so sorry! Forgive this incompetent servant! Madam! Oh, merciful Madam, AH--" Madam Gāo sent her foot into the servant's chin, making him fall over again.

The servant clutched his aching jaw with his hand, while he stared up at his Madam with fearful eyes. "You dare ruin my dress my with your filthy hands! Look, you've already stained it!" Madam Gāo pointed a manicured nail to the spot on her dress.

Though it was barely visible, the servant knew that every article of clothing that the Madam owned was like her child.

"Madam, Madam, forgive this servant! I'll--I'll pay for your dress. And buy for you so many more!" The servant whimpered when Madam Gāo let out a witch's cackle.

Madam Gāo continued to laugh, causing the atmosphere of the room to become even more uncomfortable, and making the two maids at the door fidget.

"You? You think you will be able to afford a dress similar to this? No less two? Ha!" Madam Gāo sneered at the servant kneeling on his knees. She spit at him, making him flinch as the spit landed on his face.

"Don't make promises you can't keep." She said and sauntered her way to her golden throne. A maid hands her a delicate cup of tea. Madam Gāo drinks it down in two gulps.

Then, she gestures for one of the men that guarded the throne room. The guard walked up to her with trembling steps. This made the Madam roll her eyes and slam her cup into the arm of the chair, shattering it.

"You're a guard, aren't you? What are you doing trembling like that? Do you have no backbone?"

As a maid cleared the broken cup pieces, Madam Gāo ordered the guard to hand over the sword at his hip. Without hesitation, he obeyed. He unseathed his sword from its holder and gently placed the hilt in the Madam's outstretched hand.

Madam Gāo's cold eyes gleamed at the sight of the meticulously polished sword in her hand. She held it up to a lamp on the wall, delighted at how the light flickered off of its shining surface.

She left her throne, and in a single command she ordered every person except for the servant on the floor to leave the throne room.

A/N: The few following chapters are the backstory on Gāo Mansion and its Madam. You may skip the next 5-6 chapters if you don't care about what happens in what I hope I'll be able to write out in gruesome detail.

So if you're faint-hearted or simply do not care, then skip to the chapter titled: IN THE CLOUDS.

There will be a very brief summary of the Gāo Mansion's history bu Wei WuXian.

But I really do mean brief.

So if you don't want to get confused with the timelines of the story, then skip ahead.

(I'm going to regret putting this author's note here. Cuz lemme tell you, the backstory is pretty bloody. And the last chap of the backstory, feels quite satisfying)
