Chapter 17

Soul's pov.

I haven't moved In days. I've felt so useless and hopeless. I've just laid in my bed staring at the blank ceiling and wishing Maka was here. I missed the way her body felt next to mine when we snuggled or the way her lips tasted whenever I got the chance to kiss her. My eyes hurt from crying, and I know that isn't cool, but I don't care anymore.

Tsubaki and sometimes the others came over everyday to check on me. They made sure I was eating and taking showers now and again. They tried to convince me to come to school but I simply refused. I didn't say much these days.

They tried saying Maka would chastise me for not going to school and getting behind in homework. This caused me to blow up on them, which is the most talking I've done, and totally freak out. After that I would turn my back and cry into my pillow, and they would leave.

Today was no different, same pillow, same bed, and same boring old ceiling. Suddenly there was a loud knock, a thrown open door, lots of loud footsteps and them my team were all standing in my room.

I looked at them strangely and they looked at me expectantly.

"Get your ass up we're going to see stein" Patty said in her creepy voice which honestly scares the hell out of me.

"Why?" I ask miserably.

"Because we got some word on the samples." Kid says.

This woke me right up. "I'll be out in a minute, let me get dressed." I tell them and wait as they all filed out of my room so I can get dressed. I dress quickly and fly out of my room, grabbing my keys to my bike. I look back at my team. "well? What are you waiting for? let's go!"

I follow them to the school and I can tell we all are itching for some news from the samples. This could really be the turning point in this game. This could lead us straight to Maka so we could get her back. This idea motivated me and helped me thrive up the steps and to steins office.

"Tell me the news" I say as soon as I see him. "Good or bad I need to know, I need to hear something. Just tell me please."

"You guys really don't waist anytime getting here do you?" He twisted the nail in his head a couple times. I only glared at him. "alright alright, have a seat, all of you. We've got some things to discuss."

We all found a seat and awaited him to continue speaking.

"As you know we just completed most the research on the samples only hours ago. These things that we've been fighting are like nothing we've ever seen before. We also have it confirmed that it is Arachnae behind all of this. Witches are stubborn little bitches aren't they?" he laughed a little at his own joke but we all stayed silent. "tough crowd." he murmured. "Anyway, we've figured that Arachnae has been building these machines and then bonding a monsters soul to it. She's literally finding all the dormant monster's souls and reaping them for her little creations. We've also noticed how many inventors have gone off the grid as well. There's been at least seventeen missing person reports all being local inventors in cities. We suspect Arachnae has taken them hostage and has forced them to build these machines for her. It also looks like these machines are getting stronger. Each monster's soul that she reaps is most likely stronger than the last, that means she has to update the machinery she uses to contain the monster within so she can control it, but I'm afraid she's going to awake the monsters that are two big for her to handle. If that happens, Havoc will real across the world and we'll all be in trouble again. It took all of the weapons and Meisters to put those monsters to sleep, many people died, it nearly destroyed the world. Plus we just had that huge fight with the Asura. I'm not sure we could handle another thing like that for awhile. Especially if it were monsters stronger than the first time we had to fight them."

"But your forgetting Stein, this next generation has gotten stronger as well, I think we could handle our own fairly well, we have so far, with a few exceptions. I think we could work a whole lot more on technique. We need to find these things weaknesses. Of course I can't really do that without Maka, so I guess my point is, do you have any idea where she is? or if she's...." I couldn't even finish my sentence.

"No. You know those needles you gave me that you said shot out of the monsters skin and into Maka? Well they were covered in sterilizing poison, they only wanted to knock you guys out not kill you which makes me wonder what they're up to. We've gotten a few scents and have sent teams with hounds in general areas, particularly in the places you've already fought." he put a hand on my shoulder. "We're doing all we can. We'll let you know if we find anything else."

I let out a breath of air. At least now I know she's not dead, but then again I never really thought she was. She's somewhere out there, just barely out of reach. "I understand." was all I said then turned and walked out. The others followed.

"You... ok?" Tsubaki asked a little hesitantly.

"Uh... yeah." I responded. And I really was, things were finally starting to look up for once. "how bout a game of basketball? We could all use a little distraction from all this bull shit." I looked around the group and they gave me half smiles and agreements. "alright then, to the court it is." I put my hands in my pockets as I walked out to my bike. "oh yeah," I called to the others who were getting into their cars. "first one there gets special benefits." I say and with that I start the bike and race to the court.
