CHAPTER NINE

A STARTLING CHIME from my phone jolted through my system, extruding me from my deep slumber. Groan slipped out of my mouth as I fumbled for the noisy thing and shut it to life. God, my head was throbbing and my eyes needed more time of sleep. I was awake until 2 a.m. since I'd done readings and reviewing. Once I got to touch my phone, I clutched onto it and hovered up my phone. I opened my left eye to take a glimpse at the name of the caller. The light from the phone punctured my sight. I squeezed my eyes shut and rolled over to the side of my bed to flick on the lampshade.

It was still early, I know. Hindi pa maliwanag sa labas. I flicked on the lampshade and looked at the caller's ID. When the name of Kei Alexander de Chavez shamelessly showed up, an exasperated groan rumbled out of my throat. God, if I can ever dip my hand inside the screen of my phone, I would to and strangle him to death.

"Good morning, sunshine—"

"Damn you with your sunshine, Kei. It's fucking early, what's your problem?!"

He chuckled, "Babe, stop spitting profanity. It wasn't cool at all."

I rolled my eyes, "Whatever. Make sure na importante 'yang sasabihin mo."

I heard him clicked her tongue, "Today's Sunday..." He grumbled.

"And...?"

"And?"

Silence suffused between us. Confusion lined a crease over my forehead as I dig deeper and tried to recall if we have a practice this day. Pero wala talaga akong maalala na practice namin ngayon. I rose and leapt out of my bed to trot toward my calendar.

Sunday... Sunday... Let's attend a mass together...

My eyes widened when the voice of Kei rippled through my head. As far as I can remember, never did I agree to his plan anymore. Hindi pa rin nagsasalita si Kei sa kabilang linya na mistulang hinahayaan akong isipin ang nakaligtaan ko ngayon.

"Oh, God, don't tell me you actually decided by your own without my final say on this? I didn't agree to go with you today, Kei!" I grunted.

"I thought you agreed," he whispered.

I could picture him suppressing his pathetic grin flashing across his face. As the image of him doing that flickered in my head, something in my stomach curdled. The remaining air in my lungs slips out I had to inhale sharply to catch my breath. Oh, damn it, what was happening to me? I really needed to do something to will away these ridiculous thoughts running in my head most of the time.

Silenced encompassed my room. I could hear the imaginary sound of crickets resonating in my head. Kei did not say a thing after what he said as if he was waiting for my defense, but no words slip out of my mouth because I was too busy pondering what was happening to me. I needed to talk, I chided mentally.

"U-uhm..." I stuttered. What the fuck?

He sighed heavily. My chest constricted in his sound... it seemed like it was a sigh of defeat. I chewed the back of my left cheek as I stood erratically, waiting for his words to fill my ears.

"Don't you really want to go with me?" He whispered, "If you really don't like to go, it's okay, babe. It's actually my fault that I hadn't—"

"I'll go with you, Kei." Words slipped out of my mouth without hesitation.

Even I was shocked why those words did not falter to escape my lips. With that, my heartbeat went into crescendo... its tempo went painfully fast. My legs were like jelly right now, and at any minute it will wobble to make me topple to the floor. Before it happens, I charged to my bed and plopped myself to the side of it.
