XD*I was born in the Golden State and I lived there for most of my life. Living in California was like living a dream. The place was full of beautiful breeze and surreal sunsets. Like any 16 year old, I had certain expectations from life which at the time I didn't think about. I wanted to do so much with my life that I had planned everything out. By the minute. Reaching every goal was the only way I would be able to live my dream and I wouldn't compromise that for anybody.
I was the type of kid who was popular for being good at what they do not for anything else. I hadn't been involved in a major teenager drama yet nor had I dated many guys. So really I was just a successful loser. I spent most of my days worrying about what I would do the next day and the day after that and what if I don't become what I wanted to become. So I never really enjoyed life, like teenagers and kids my age should. I wanted to be top of my class, best in sports and extra-curricular which mostly led to me living a very non so upbeat life.
What I did worry about was becoming a stat rather than a story but I was a person who wanted both. My daily routine consisted of being woken up by my mother because the alarm never reached my ear and so today wasn't any different.
It was a beautiful morning. The sun had risen above the horizon. Meryl entered the room and drew open the curtains.
"Audrey wake up, it's seven and you don't want to be late for your first day of school"
"Let me sleep for five more minutes". We all know what a beautiful lie that is. The unending five minutes in the morning. One minute it is seven the next minute it's half-past eight and you're late.
"Audrey wake up its seven forty-five you're late"
I woke up with a bewildered look.
"What it's seven forty-five! Shit, I'm late!" Baffled I ran to the bathroom.
"No!! This can't be"
I hurriedly brushed my teeth and performed the morning ritual and then came out in my towel only to realize it was 7:25 and my mother had pulled the worst prank on me early in the morning.
I was annoyed. " Mother why would you do that to me. I was panicking the whole time"
"Well, that's the only way a monster like you would get out of bed. Now go and get dressed"
I moved at the pace of a sloth bear just to get back at my mother.
"Audrey can you walk any faster"
Meryl's words didn't seem to affect me.
"Faster.." even before Ma could finish the sentence I screamed "That's what she said" and that statement was followed by a smirk. My mother was so done with me already.
"Oh god. Get dressed"
We both laughed incandescently.
I picked out a nice semi-formal outfit and wore my favorite sneakers.
" Mother I'm dressed"
" Oh let me see. You are all grown up. I can't believe it. It feels like yesterday when we got you home, you would cry all the time and now look at you. I'm so proud of you"
I could see right through my mother. Mumma looked upset because she knew the next step would be college and I would move out. Mia my elder sister had also left for college a few years ago and the pressure of doing well was always on the "Martin girls". Let's just say Mia couldn't come home that often. I gave her mother a big hug then whispering in her ear "I will forever be your annoying daughter and don't worry I have to pass this year to go to college"
