I groaned, getting up and putting a hand to my head feeling dazed. A deep gray mist surrounded me, and it seemed to stretch on forever. I could feel my body, or, at least what felt like my body. I looked at my hands, which seemed fine. The sound of faint breathing reached my ears. Oh no, no please not this, I mentally thought. The memory came back to me, haunting me every night. He haunted me.
"You could have saved me, Hori." A voice called out through the mist. "No. No, please. Please. Go away." I said. I knew that voice, that stupid little nickname he used for me. A soft cracking reached my ears, and I screamed to see a body in front of me. It lay on the ground, facing me, blood oozing from its mouth.
"No. Don't show me this." I sobbed. The body stood up, and I already knew who it was. My older brother, Yasari. Bullet wounds appeared on his body as I was forced to relive the moment he died, shot to death right in front of me. "You could have saved us." He hissed, his black hair wild in the air, his hazel eyes gleaming with hate as he glared at me. "You could have saved us all." Next, my parents rose, with different wounds. My father, with a knife buried in his chest, and my mother, a shot to the head.
More people began to rise, people I knew. Friends, family members, and now, my new classmates. Shuichi, Kaede, Kaito. Kiyo. Their eyes stared at me hungrily as they walked towards me. Kiyo was there first, and he grabbed my face in one of his bandaged hands, golden eyes bloodshot as he forced me to look at him. "Look at me." He growled. He lowered himself towards me, hungrily, wanting me, waiting me to join hi-
"NO!" I yelled, shooting upright in bed, drenched in sweat. My door opened and my mother and father walked in, both in their pajamas. "Honey?" My mom said worriedly. "You okay?" "I-I'm fine." I said weakly. "Clearly." My father scoffed. "Was it him?" He asked. I nodded, taking a deep breath. My mom rushed over to me, grabbing my shoulders. "Well, he's gone. He's okay." She said. I let out a hoarse laugh. "I'm not eight, mom. I watched him die right in front of me. And I couldn't do anything about it." I said. "I know. I know." She said, which angered me.
"You don't." I said angrily. "You don't get it. He was shot to death right in front of me. I watched it happen. I couldn't save him then and I can't save him now." I said. I sighed. "I'm okay. I just need to sleep." I groaned. "Okay." My mom said. "Love you honey." She gave me one last look before shutting the door. I sighed and tried to fall back asleep, pulling the covers over myself once again. I soon fell into darkness once again, with no nightmares.
In the morning I walked to school once again, arriving early. Four people were there, Miss Yukizome, who was looking at her clipboard, Shuichi and Kaede, who were talking, but at the same time seemed to be flirting with each other , and Kiyo, who was staring off into space. I walked though the door, and Miss Yukizome greeted me with a hello, and I smiled, giving one back. Shuichi and Kaede stopped talking to say hi as well. "Hey." Shuichi said, giving me a small wave. "Hi, Yoshiro-San." Kaede greeted me respectfully. I laughed. "Hi to you too, Saihara-Kun, Akamatsu-San."
"You okay, man?" Shuichi asked, peering at me, assessing me with his eyes. "You look a little rattled." "Meh. Didn't get much sleep last night." I responded. My eyes fell on Kiyo, who finally greeted me with a small bow, which I returned. "Glad you got here early, Horiuchi. We should talk about yesterday, shouldn't we?" He said, almost whispering. I nodded, my face turning pink as I remembered him kissing me. "What are you two talking about?" Kaede questioned from behind me. "Nothing." I laughed. "Oh really? Then why are you blushing?" She asked teasingly. I could feel my face turn red. "Akamatsu-San, leave him alone." Shuichi laughed as he placed a hand on her shoulder. Kaede rolled her eyes. "Fine." She said, then giggled.
Kiyo pulled me away from them and we began to talk about what happened. "I apologize for what happened last night. I don't know what came over me." He said quickly, glancing over at the others to make sure they didn't hear. "You don't need to." I said. "I do. I was out of line. I didn't ask or anythin-." I cut him off. "You don't need to. I actually liked it, if I'm being honest here." I said. "I do need to ask, because that would be sexual assault if not, and I figured you wouldn't- you did?" He said. I nodded, my face turning pink. I laughed. "Well then. Should we continue our talk sometime?" He asked.
"Today. After school. 4:00. Starbucks by the Macy's in the mall. Let's talk there." I said quickly. "Is this what you would call a "coffee date"?" He asked. I laughed. "Yeah. Meet me there. Don't be late." I said just as the bell began to ring. We then both walked into class, and the school day officially began.
