"Do you want to know the method in not being hurt by people? Don't give or take anything. Don't expect anything either. Then, you won't be disappointed or hurt."
-- My Love From the Stars
Brad decided that he was going to drop us off at his house before he went to his warehouse. As much as I hated him I didn't want him to be alone there. Lexi would be going crazy knowing what we were up to. I didn't like it. He was going to get himself into a pile of trouble. Especially if anything goes wrong. I'm sure something will.
"Get out. Don't call me. Don't text me. I'll be at the warehouse if anyone needs me."
"What about Wayne? You know how he is."
"He wouldn't dare try to cross his superior. Don't worry about me. I'll be fine. If you hear anything about me going to jail...I'll get out. That means Wayne is getting ready to do his job."
"Fine. Don't ask for our help when he's done something stupid."
Brad drove off in a hurry. It was Thursday. Usually on Thursdays we took the kids out to watch a movie and eat at the most expensive restaurant I could afford. But today was our day and I needed some time to figure out what we were going to do about today. Wayne was off wherever he was doing whatever he was doing.
"Where are we going now?" I asked.
"Cameron's old hideout," Hayden said. "I should have some cameras in that bag in the trunk. We'll set them up and bring the crew out tomorrow."
"What are we doing there?"
"Just a little something that will get Cameron thinking. Once we get finished with everything we'll go to LA to celebrate this weekend."
"I thought you hated the holidays..."
"I hate a lot of things, Sha'Kera."
Well that was that. Being near Cameron's hideout again was bringing back memories. Hayden used Lexi as an excuse to be here and spied on him all the while. It wasn't anything fun like I'd hoped. except when we exposed his team for smuggling in Opium. He packed up everything and disappeared. The force couldn't find him after that.
Hayden went inside to set up the cameras while I stayed outside and put them up. We'd come back tomorrow to program everything, so someone was going to keep guard tonight. I don't know if Cameron remembers this place. If he does it'll be his last resort if something happens.
While I was setting up Hayden's phone rang. I was tempted to just leave it, but what if it was Jackson? Or mom? I couldn't ignore it. I left my post and answered it.
"Hello?"
"Hey, is Hayden still in town?"
I looked at the caller ID and scowled. One of his stupid buddies. I hate them all with a searing passion. Even their wives who think they're better than me.
"Hellooo."
"Yes," I muttered. "You want to have dinner with us, don't you?"
"You know it!" He laughed. "I'll send the details to his phone. You just make sure your fine--"
"Of course I'll be there. Hayden wouldn't have it any other way."
I hung up and tossed the phone back in the car. Twenty minutes later, Hayden came outside. He saw that I was leaning against the car in thought and came over.
"You finished?" he asked.
"Yup." I nodded.
"Whatcha thinking about?"
