IT all happened so quickly.
You swore you saw the car crash happen.
You were standing there before, you must've been.
Maybe it was all just in your head. Maybe you were trying to convince yourself that if you had been there, then you could've helped Bella. It didn't take a genius to know that it would've been impossible for the average person to prevent a from crashing. So why couldn't you stop thinking about it?
Seeing Bella carried out by the ambulance, while she claimed nothing bad had happened to her was the most surreal thing. None of it really made any sense. Luckily, there was no one else looking for any sense of her miraculous survival. Everyone was just happy, relieved that she was okay.
You had just arrived and more crazy things have happened in the past two weeks, than your entire seventeen years of life.
To make matters worse all you could think about was Astrid. Even when your cousin was seated on a stretcher, doctors checked here and there making sure she was okay.
Astrid left so abruptly. Is that what you could call it? Was your concept of time just all jumbled?
Charlie had driven himself close to the point of insanity. He rushed to the hospital as fast as he possibly could and promised to make sure the guy who did this would be out of license for a while. He even called, Renee, which you knew Bella wasn't going to be happy about if this is as much of an exaggeration as she makes it out to be.
She had explained only to you what she saw happen.
"He grabbed me and pushed us both out of the way." her eyes were everywhere but you, thoughts rapidly moving as she tried to make any bit of sense of what happened. She knew she wasn't crazy, she also knew she didn't hit her head, Edward made sure of that.
"Bella, how could he move that fast? Wouldn't his legs have been crushed in between the cars?" you tried to think. None of it added up.
"I don't know. he just... look, I hit my head I'm not sure what I saw or what happened. But I am okay, he is okay, everyone's okay so we can just drop it." she lied, hoping to figure it out on her own. If something was going on, no one else could be involved.
Something deep down crept up on you and cried out to you that she didn't hit her head, and something was definitely going on. But you did your best to push that down and give her your full attention, there was no need to stress her out more.
"Okay."

Astrid had stopped by to see her mom again, this time with more unsatisfactory news than the last.
"There's been a vampire attack in Seattle. You are going to have to keep our people away from here, stay away from the surface." she signed.
"We cant survive that way." Althea signed back.
"If you continue to let the people travel back and forth they will die. A Cullen, he has fallen for a human. She is unreadable. He is not."
"What will we do?" Never, had Althea looked to Astrid for answers. It just wasn't done. This time was different. There was real danger.
"Move north, come back alone in two months, I will bring (y/n) to you. Do not interfere, I have it handled." Astrid commanded, leaving her mother and her people to make the right decision... listen.
Terrible things once happened when a creature of Astrid's type ended up around a vampire.
She was taught at a very young age how to survive, obey and kill. For her kind, these were the basic and only skills needed. Here, it was different, she was still learning. And if she was going to do right by everyone, she needed to have complete control.
One thing about being independent and blending in... she was beginning to think being allowed to go to a human school was more of a punishment than a privilege.
Astrid shook her head as visions of you began to flash in her mind. At random times she would see you, your smile, and hear your voice. This wasn't normal. She had only used her ability with you a few times.
Maybe she wasn't strong enough? Maybe it was because of your ancestry? No matter the real reason, she was going to find out the information she needed.
She also needed to keep you away from the vampires.
☆
Later that night, you decided against fighting with your mind and letting thoughts of Astrid lull you to sleep.
Soon the thoughts of Astrid had faded, turning into piercing pains in your head.
Screams, fangs, blood.
You jumped awake, chest heaving and head pounding, each thump full of pain.
You turned to find Bella awake as well, giving you a look of concern as she leaned over the edge of the bed.
"Why are you awake?" you asked her.
"I woke up and I thought I saw something." she rasped, voice still quiet from sleep.
"Oh." you breathed out, looking down at the blanket.
"Bad dream?" she asked you.
"Yeah" you nodded, looking out the window.
The bright light of the moon filtered through the blinds, leaving a foggy mist.
You needed to talk to your mom.
As for Bella, that was the first night she had dreamt of Edward Cullen, and it sure wouldn't be the last. She called it a dream to convince herself that it was all in her head, that one conversation pulled her mind to thoughts of him while she slept and it would all be over soon.
