previously: and before she even had time to panic, a burn filled her lungs- for the first time ever astrid felt her lungs begging for air. her body was responding in a way she had never felt before. her fingernails remained fragile, dull- no claws. her legs had remained covered in skin- no scales. her teeth had remained filed down, flat - no fangs. fuck fuck fuck-

she swam up as fast as she could, body gliding through the water as she once again found the surface and broke through, chest heaving as she gasped for air, eyes burning from the salt contaminants as tears fell from how truly scared she was. this wasn't normal, this wasnt supposed to happen - ever.

"what the fuck," she spoke with her first few breaths, swimming back to the shore. the look in ezra's eyes was unreadable, he looked at a loss of words. he took a breath, handing astrid her shirt and rubbing his face in frustration.

"you did not change."

"really? i didn't notice," astrid spoke with harsh sarcasm, throwing her hands up.

"you go in house, i will get althea."

THE intial panic had taken over the moment astrid allowed her arms and legs to move and her brain to function as she held her clothes close to her body, in which the salty ocean water had soaked. she passed ezra without another word who was making quick work at stripping himself. he dove into the ocean, for a moment scared- himself, with the paranoid thought that he wouldnt go through the shifting process. however he felt the shock and pain as soon as he hit the water. ezra had never swam so fast in his life, desperate to follow the water's currents and tides in search of their tribe grounds. he took a quick note of how he hadn't ever been so far out from home since the incident with james, he wasn't so sure he ever would again before he met astrid.

back in the house, astrid dressed herself in some dry clothes, finding another t-shirt to dry her hair. the water droplets that dripped down her curls, and hit the wood floor were louder than ever, they overtook the silence that filler her ears. soon her heavy breaths also filled the space, the rapid beating of her heart, the sound of her nails being bit off by her own chattering teeth. she had never, in the history of any tribe, any shape shifting species, heard of a tale where the creature couldnt transform. it wasnt right, it wasnt known. it had her mind racing at the speed of light. she searched for any reasonable explanation, any reason why such a fucked up thing was happening to her and why now all of a sudden. it wasnt until that moment that she recapped the morning in her mind, sifted through every possible aspect and or reason as to why she couldnt. her stomach hadnt stopped twisting all morning, beginning with the dream and ending with her lack of tail on the ocean.

she kept replaying in her mind the feeling of what it was like to almost be killed by the thing she had always called her home. the ocean. the way her lungs were burning and beginning for air, almost subject to being filled with water. the way she thrashed around, not able to hold herself up. she overthought to the point where she was ready to try again, simply to get rid of the shaking, the tears, the empty feeling in her stomach that sunk to her stomach. she couldnt handle being human anymore, not now at least. she needed you.

and at that realization, she also realized that she had no way home. she was miles away from forks, not even exactly sure how far. no car, no phone, no tail. she felt as if she was stranded on an island, stuck exactly where she sit, clueless & helpless. there had to be a way. and so far, the only thing she could think of was you. she was connected to you, you were her only resource. all she could do was hope you would hear her, that you still felt her in the back of your head. that you still cared enough to listen out for her.
