TW: a bit of violence

Janus stared at the two amulets on his wall. Every witch has one, they're made from gemstones that their parents usually enchant to help strengthen their magic. The gemstone is connected to the witch's soul, so if a witch is separated from the stone then they become weak.

The yellow one was Janus's, though he doesn't usually wear it since it's an easy way to get caught. The purple one belonged to his brother, Virgil. There's no way Virgil could be alive now, not after what had happened. If he was caught then he was surely executed by now. And if not, well it's easier for Janus to believe he's in a better place.

The night that he lost his brother was a hard one to remember. It was dark and cold, and neither of them were able to make out just how many people were chasing them. They got separated, Janus heard Virgil scream from far away, and by the time he got to where the scream came from it was too late. Virgil was missing and his amulet was on the ground.

Janus blinked back tears. He couldn't afford to get emotional now, he had to do this for Virgil. He's going to kill Alec for his brother.

He reached out and pulled his yellow amulet off of the wall, immediately feeling more powerful. He should wear it, his whole crew knows he's a witch and they all still love him, but it's just too painful. It's another reminder of his parents and his brother.

He jumped when he heard a knock on the door.

"Captain? It's Remus," he heard them call in.

"Come in, Prince Remus," Janus called back, still holding his amulet.

Remus opened the door and walked in. "I just came to thank you for today's spar, it was quite fun. The most I've had in a long time."

Janus smiled at him. "It was my pleasure. Was that all you came here to do?"

"Well, I was hoping to talk for a bit. This Alec guy, do you believe he really has my brother?"

"Well, your brother is a prince so I'm not sure. A lot of people are willing to kidnap royals for ransoms."

"There has been no ransom message. No one has contacted us of Roman's whereabouts. I don't believe these people are going to return him to us, that's why I need to save him."

"Why are you specifically saving him? Why not send some knights, or anyone else? Surely your parents have several people looking into this."

"Yes, practically the whole kingdom is searching for him."

"So shouldn't you be there to help support your kingdom from the castle?"

"I can't do anything there, staying safe in the castle! I might be a prince but I'm powerless in this situation. So I have to do it myself, with the help of a detective and Patton insisted on coming along. But I will save my brother, family is everything to me."

Janus paused for a moment as he took everything in. Finally he whispered, "I know the feeling. Alec took my brother from me too."

"Really? Then we can save both of our brothers together!"

Janus chuckled and shook his head. "No, I won't be able to get my brother back. He's dead, Alec killed him."

Remus was frozen. "Oh... is that why you want revenge?"

Janus nodded as he felt tears well up in his eyes again. "Why am I even telling you this? I only ever told my crew about this, they're the only ones that know. So why is it so easy to talk to you?!"

"Well I can't answer that, but what I do know is that you need some support right now. I've... lost someone once, someone close to me, so I know the pain. And I know we don't know each other that well, but I am here if you need to talk about it."
