TW: death
Remus was thirteen now, grumbling under his breath and packed his suitcase.
There was a knock on the door and Remus called, "Come in."
The door creaked open and Connor stuck his head in. Remus turned and his mood instantly went up when he saw the pale boy with freckles and red hair.
"Connor!" Remus smiled wide.
"Your highness," Connor greeted. "I... heard what happened."
"Yeah, I'm sure everyone has by now. The disgraceful prince got in another fight with his father the king and is now being sent off back to schools for snobs. Ugh, I hate that place."
"You're not a disgraceful prince." Connor took Remus's hand.
"Only you would feel that way." Remus smiled at him.
"Now you know that's a lie, your mother and brother still love you dearly." Connor kissed his cheek. "Though I love you in a different way."
"I feel the same way you do." Remus gave him a hug.
"Now you be safe while you're away, try to avoid getting in any fights with the other students there."
"No promises, and I'll be back before you know it!"
"Here, take this with you." Connor took off his green amulet and put it around Remus's neck.
"Are you sure? Don't you need this?"
"I'll be fine for a few months, I want you to take care of it for me." Connor smiled brightly, Remus couldn't get enough of his smile. "I'll still be here, waiting for your return."

Remus breathed in the fresh sea air late at night after Janus had gone to bed. He fiddled with the green amulet around his neck as he stared off into the vast ocean, leaning against the railing.
He couldn't get the thought of Janus crying out of his head. He always got attached too fast. It pained him to know that Janus was grieving the loss of someone he was close to, Remus knew that loss all too well.
"You should go to bed, it's late" Diego told him, taking over his night shift.
"I'm not tired," Remus answered.
"Hmm, okay." Diego was silent for a moment before asking, "So, where'd you get that witch's amulet?"
"What?!" Remus was shocked Diego knew he had it.
"Oh please, don't be surprised. I knew you had it the second I saw you. Janus has sensed it already as well, though he's sure you didn't steal it. So, where'd you get it?"
Remus squeezed the amulet in his hand. "Someone I was very close to gave it to me as a parting gift. I was supposed to return it, but when I got back I was too late."
"Oh, I'm sorry."
Remus laughed lightly, "Sometimes I wonder what would have happened if I had insisted that he kept it, but I was young and foolish, blinded by love. I was being sent somewhere horrible and I wanted a part of him to comfort me. Now I carry it with me everywhere. If I hadn't been so selfish, then maybe he would be alive."
"If it makes you feel any better, I don't believe you are to blame at all. I've seen Janus fight without his amulet many times and he's still strong."
"Yeah but it was months before he was caught, and I was far away with the amulet. I know his magic was stretched thin and the longer a witch is from an amulet the weaker their magic is."
