TW: blood, violence, and throw up
Roman held Virgil's hand as he pulled him along and led him through the forest. Virgil seems to have calmed down a bit but Roman knew he was still upset. It hurt Roman to see Virgil so desperate to find his amulet only to realize it was gone.
It had to have been stolen, or maybe an animal found it. It couldn't have been broken because Virgil would have felt it and he would have known. It's still out there somewhere, but Virgil won't ever be able to find it again. The connection was faint which meant it wasn't anywhere nearby.
"Okay, we've been walking for awhile, do you want to rest and eat?" Roman asked Virgil, who just mutely nodded.
Roman pulled out some bread and handed it to Virgil, who numbly took it. Roman took out some food for himself and they sat down to eat.
"Are you okay?" Roman asked softly.
Virgil simply just shook his head with a dull look in his eyes. Roman wanted to reach out and hug him again.
"I'm sorry, I know it hurts."
"Don't. I don't want any pity," Virgil finally spoke up.
"Virg-"
"No! It's fine, I don't need any pity. I'm fine."
"No you're not."
"I'm fine! It was stupid of me to think it was still there! I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. I just-" Virgil ran his hands through his hair and sighed. "I just need a moment to collect myself."
"Okay, but I'm here for you."
"Right." Virgil nodded.
They fell into an awkward silence and Roman wanted to tap his foot or bounce his knee but he was too afraid to since it could annoy Virgil.
"So, the plan is still the same?" Virgil asked, trying to distract himself.
"I-I suppose. It's not like we have much of a choice," Roman pointed out.
"Yeah, the faster we get out of here the better. Maybe we should-" Virgil cut himself off. There was shouting coming from somewhere.
Roman heard it too and strained his ears to hear what was being said.
"We need to search the woods! We already have the town being searched, several men are at the docks to make sure no one escapes," the voice filled the air, freezing Roman and Virgil.
"We need to hide," Virgil whispered.
"We need to get out of here," Roman said. "No use in hiding if they find us."
Virgil threw the rest of his food in his bag and put it over his shoulder as Roman did the same. They ran off, trying to be as quiet as possible while following the stream.
"There! There's movement over there!" They were spotted.
Virgil cursed under his breath. "Run, I'll hold them back."
"Are you crazy?" Roman asked. "There's no way I'm leaving you behind like that. If you fight, I fight. I'm not letting you get caught again."
"Roman-"
"Virgil I'm not doing it."
"There! I see them!" Virgil turned back to see several men chasing. His heart leapt to his throat and he grabbed Roman's hand, running faster and pulling Roman along.
"We can't out run them forever," Roman warned. "They're going to catch up eventually, we have to fight."
"No, we're far too outnumbered and I don't think I would be able to last long in a fight without my amulet," Virgil said. "I'm just going to have to teleport us again."
