"Thank you so much!" Roman cried in relief.
"No problem, any enemy of Lord A-hole is a friend of ours," Cynthia said. Roman was able to find help from a medic and she brought them over to her house. "Alec has been taxing us far too much, I'm almost broke. I don't care if it gets us in trouble for harboring some 'criminals,' they'll never find you two here. Now, let's take a look at your friend."
"Yes, of course, please." Roman held on tight to Virgil's hand. Virgil was laid down on the bed in Cynthia's spare bedroom. His fever has gotten worse and Roman was starting to worry.
"What happened exactly?"
"Um, well while we were held in captivity he got sick. I knew he wouldn't make it if we stayed and we had already come up with an escape plan. So we did but he only got worse."
"Really? I heard one of you two were a witch."
"What? No, they're just saying that to incriminate us! We're both human."
"Sir, I'm going to need to know what really happened if I'm going to help him. This doesn't seem like any normal illness and I don't know how to treat him just yet. Trust me, I won't care if he's a witch."
"He's not, I swear." Roman really didn't want her to find out. She could turn them in if she does.
"If you're going to keep lying I'm afraid I won't be able to treat him."
"Okay fine he is! Just help him please! He used too much magic, I told him not to, now he's sick and I don't know what to do!"
"Calm down, I'll be able to treat this properly now. I just wanted to be sure. His magic does feel very weak and I couldn't be sure if he was human or not. Since he's not that is very troubling."
"Wait you're able to sense his magic?" Roman asked, highly confused.
Cynthia looked over at him with a smile and her eyes turned from green to pink. "Yeah, I actually hate Alec for more than one reason. So, what happened to this guy's amulet?"
"Stolen."
"Thought so, and uh, is there a reason you two are bonded?"
"Wait, how did you know?"
Cynthia gave him a knowing look. "I can see traces of his magic on you. Can you answer my question?"
"He uh, I was shot with an arrow and he panicked, not wanting me to die so he bonded us."
"Oof, okay. Well, both of those things alone already makes his magic stretched thin and weakened. How long ago was his amulet stolen? Do you know?"
"Six or seven months," Roman whimpered. He was really starting to panic, would Virgil be okay?
"Wait seriously? That's troubling. What spell did he use to get him like this?"
"A teleportation spell, I don't know how far he teleported us or what but it drained him completely."
"Dang okay, that's a lot of strain on his magic."
"I know! I told him not to but he didn't listen because we were being chased! It was reckless and stupid and I'm so afraid that he's going to die. Can you help him?"
"Yes I can, I can restore some of his magic by giving him some of mine but he's going to have to break his fever on his own."
"But he will be alright, right?"
"Don't worry, I'm sure he'll be fine. Just don't let him use any more magic. Of course, using the mindlink will be fine since it hardly takes any magic."
