We all filtered onto the train single file and walked until we found an empty cabin. Evie, Fred, George, and Cedric got settled in, and I followed. The conductor happened to be walking by and he stopped me.

"Miss? Sorry, but 4 people to a cabin is the limit," he said. "I can show you to another cabin if you'd like."

I shook my head. "No thank you, I can find one on my own." The train lurched forward and I stumbled, we were moving. The conductor looked at me again.

"Better hurry up then," he said. He kept walking, and I looked at Evie and the boys as they bid me farewell.

"Y/n, we'll meet you at the sorting ceremony," Evie said.

"See you at Hogwarts, Loesser!" called Fred (or George) as I walked down the narrow hallway in search of a vacant cabin. I walked for what felt like miles before I found an empty cabin. Well, almost empty, except for one pale blonde girl. A grey cat was curled up on her shoulders, fast asleep. She wore a white sweater over a pair of pink overalls with little roses on them, and she had a big book open on her lap.

I opened the cabin door and she looked up at me with glittering blue eyes.

"Uh, can I come in? Everywhere else is full," I say.

"Of course," the girl says. Her voice is oddly soothing. I put Milo (who had fallen asleep in his cage) on the bench opposite the one she's sitting on and go to get the rest of my luggage. The cat jumps off her shoulders and hops up next to the cage. Milo, scared awake, spreads his wings and screeches in response. The cat backs up, startled.

"Bloody hell, Milo, she was saying hello. Be nice, will you?" I scold him, scooping up the cat and putting her on the floor. "So sorry about that, he was just startled," I say to the girl, sitting on the other bench.

"It's alright," she said. "Sage tends to think that everybody is a new friend." She was right. Sage was rubbing herself against my legs, purring. I reached down and scratched her head. The girl looked up at me and closed her book.

"Where have my manners gone? I never properly introduced myself, did I?" she said. "I'm Luna. Luna Lovegood."

"I'm y/n Loesser," I respond. "Are you a first year too?"

"No, second," Luna says. "But that means you're getting sorted today, what house are you hoping for?"

"Ravenclaw," I say without hesitation. "It runs in the family. My grandparents, my parents, my aunts and uncles, my sister. I just feel like I'd be breaking some unspoken tradition if I was sorted anywhere else, you know?"

"I'm a Ravenclaw too," Luna says with a smile. "But don't worry, y/n, I know your family won't love you any less if you were in some other house. It'll just be the start of another new adventure." We talk for a few more hours and buy things off the snack trolley, and before long the conductor was telling us to get changed into our robes because we were almost there. I got changed into my plain black robe, Luna into her dark blue Ravenclaw one. With any luck, I'd wear the same robe tonight at the sorting ceremony dinner. A little while later we all got off the train and we all flooded into the great hall for the sorting ceremony.
