Rory and I found the laundry wing after almost a half hour of walking, and we picked up our robes. They were exactly the same as Luna's robes, dark blue with a small Ravenclaw patch sewn onto the chest on one side. Mine fit me perfectly, and Rory said his did too. We walked back and reunited with the rest of the students, which were filtering out of the great hall and settling in clusters according to house.
"Ravenclaws over here," I heard William-Head-Boy-Of-Ravenclaw say. "I was told that first years would pick up their robes in the laundry wing, which is down this hallway, make two left turns, and its the third door on your right." He looked at my sister, who was standing close by. "Evie, could you take them?" he asked. She nodded. He addressed everyone else again and pointed to her.
"Everyone, this is Evie, she'll take you down to get your robes and then you'll meet us up in the common room, so if you're a first year and you haven't gotten your robes yet, follow her." The few first years that were still in their black robes left with Evie. I sighed with relief, knowing I was rid of her for at least another hour or so. The rest of us followed William up a huge set of stairs. After that we climbed up a spiral staircase for what felt like forever.
"All this just to get up to the common room?" I ask Rory. He laughed. We kept going until we reached a door with not a lock or a doorknob, but a huge silver knocker shaped like an eagle. William turned around and talked to us again.
"In order to get into the common room, you need to answer a riddle that the knocker tells you. Get it right, you're in. Get it wrong, you have to keep answering riddles until you get one right." The knocker starts talking to him.
"Riddle me this: what has a head and a tail, but no body?" it says in an ethereal voice. William scoffs.
"Too easy," he said. "It's a coin."
"Correct," it answered back. "You may enter."
The door swung open to reveal a circular room with blue and silver tapestries hung along the walls. There was a large arched window with a telescope positioned next to it. The navy ceiling was mapped with golden stars and constellations. I looked over at the alcove of books on the other side of the room, and I couldn't help but wonder if there were any contraband restricted section books on the shelves. In the center of the room there was a shaggy grey rug with a few couches and armchairs around it. There was another door on one side of the alcove that had a silver plaque that said "DORMS". William went to it and opened it, revealing two staircases leading in opposite directions.
"These are the dorms," William said. "Girls to the left, boys to the right." Someone in the back raised their hand.
"You've got a question?" William asked. Everyone turned around to look at a first year with fluffy black hair, peeking out at us from behind thick glasses.
"Yeah," the first year said. "Let's say someone...in their heart, they don't...they don't feel like either a witch or a wizard. Where would that person go?" William's face softened.
"What's your name, mate?" he asked.
"Jordan," the first year said. There were snickers from somewhere else in the crowd.
"That's a boy's name," I heard someone whisper. It made my blood boil. William whipped his head around in the direction of the voice.
"If you've got something to say, you'd better bloody well say it loud enough so we can all hear you," he said. The anger in his voice scared me, but it silenced everyone else. He quickly calmed down and addressed Jordan again.
"And I'm assuming you use 'they-them'?" he asked. Jordan nodded. William turned around and walked just through the door so that he was facing the wall between the staircases.
"You see this wall, Jordan? Come up here and knock three times." Jordan hesitantly walked up and knocked on the wall, and an arch of bricks vanished to reveal a third staircase. "That's the dorm for anyone who isn't strictly a wizard or a witch. Any more questions?" Silence.
"Well, that's the tour, and I'm glad to bestow the label of 'chick' to the first years." he said with a smile. Rory laughs.
"Chicks? We're not that little," he says.
"I like it," I answer quickly. "Maybe I enjoy being compared to a baby bird."
"Of course you would," he laughed, rolling his eyes. William spoke again.
"I was told to tell you to get ready for bed, it's almost 9 anyway. Your roommate depends on what the first letter of your last name is, because it goes in alphabetical order. So if you've got a sibling of the same gender, they'll be your roommate." My stomach sank. Just my luck, I thought. Just my bloody luck. He continued.
"When you get up there you'll find a corridor, and each door will have a plaque on it, with your last name and your roommate's last name. You'll find that all your luggage has already been brought up, so all you need to do is get to bed. Goodnight, everyone." We all march up yet another flight of stairs (what was it with Rowena Ravenclaw and stairs?) and I walked until I found a door with a silver plaque on it that said Y/N LOESSER & EVELINA LOESSER. I opened the door to find two beds, each neatly made with blue and grey sheets. Beside each bed was a nightstand, and our trunks were pushed up against the foot of the beds. There was a big window seat on the far side of the room, and in the bright moonlight, I could see Milo once again asleep in his cage. I walked over to him and we woke up. Milo chirped happily.
"Nice to see you too," I say to him, unlocking the cage so he can stretch his wings and fly around. I change into my pajamas and crawl under the covers, not even bothering to put Milo back in his cage. I turn over and look out at the moon, missing home. I fell asleep wondering if Mum was watching the moon and thinking of me too.
