Potions eventually ended, and the rest of my classes came and went. Soon the day was over, and all the students went back to the dorms to start whatever homework they had. Rory and I marched up the tower stairs to the door. The knocker came alive and started to talk.
"Riddle me this," it says. "A man must take a fox, a chicken, and a sack of corn across a river. He can only carry one thing at a time. He cannot leave the fox and the chicken together, as the fox will eat the chicken. He cannot leave the corn and the chicken together, as the chicken will eat the corn. How does he get all three across?" I stand there, confused. Rory steps in front of me.
"This is my favorite riddle," he whispers to me, and he turns to the door. "He takes the chicken first because the corn and the fox are safe together. Then he takes the corn across, but he brings the chicken back because he can't leave those two. And since the fox and the chicken can't stay together, he brings the fox across. Then he makes one last trip to bring the chicken across," Rory says, all in one breath. He looks at me, proud of himself. I smile back at him, surprised.
"Impressive," the knocker says. "You may enter."
I follow Rory into the common room and I flop down on a couch, tossing my books to the side.
"Tired?" he asks.
"I'm not really tired," I answer. "I just...don't have any energy left."
"First day of classes takes a lot out of you, doesn't it?" Rory says. "I'll take your books up to your room if you want."
"Didn't Dumbledore say boys and girls can't go in each other's dorms?" I ask.
"He did," he admits with a grin. "But my roommate's a fourth year and he says all that's keeping us out is a charm. He says someone figured out how to break it a long time ago, and they put it back at the end of every school year so the teachers don't get suspicious. So do you want me to take your books or not?" I nod my head and he scoops up my books, headed for the dorms.
"If my owl's come back, close the window," I call after him, but he's already gone. Once again I was surprised how much he knew for a muggleborn. Not that I have anything against muggleborns, but he must have learned a lot about magic in such a short time. I lean my head against the couch and close my eyes, feeling myself drift off. Maybe I am tired after all.
"Y/n?" a voice suddenly says. I nearly jump out of my skin. Luna was sitting next to me, a startled look in her eyes. "Sorry I scared you, I didn't know you were sleeping."
"It's fine, that's what I get for falling asleep in the common room anyway," I laugh. I look out the window to find that the blue sky was now turning black. How long had I been asleep?
"Dinner's in an hour," she said as if she knew what I was thinking. "You really should eat something, you know."
"Yeah," I say, sitting up. "You said this morning to meet you in the common room?" Her face lights up.
"I did," she says with a smile. "Come, I want you to see something." Luna gets up and I follow her over to the little alcove full of books. She pushes on a shelf with both hands, and to my surprise the shelf opens up to reveal a room so dark that I couldn't even tell how big it was. I look over at Luna, confused.
"A secret room?" I ask, peering into the abyss.
"Not just any old secret room, Y/n," she says with that slightly crooked smile of hers. "Go on, see for yourself." I'm about to go in, and then I stop. A realization hits me like a ton of bricks.
"Luna, please don't take this personally but I don't enjoy being tricked," I blurt, stepping back.
"Why would I trick you?" she asks, sorrow taking over her face.
