I exhale and put my face in my hands with relief. Fred, George, and Cedric look like they'd just seen a ghost, and Rory and Cora were still clinging to each other. Luna held her wand to the car to keep the charm.
"Bloody hell, Luna. You just saved all our arses," Fred says over his shoulder at the window. She pops her head back into the window frame, her blonde curls hanging upside down.
"That was sort of the point," she said. "Can someone open a portkey to where we met up this morning?" I nod, taking my wand out of my back pocket and pointing it at the floor of the car.
"Portus," I say, and the car starts glowing blue. In a whirl of blue smoke, we're back at the edge of the dark forest, and we sit beneath the tree branches that bore a frightening resemblance to twisted, gnarled hands. Cedric turns around to look at us.
"Everyone okay?" He asks. Nobody responds. My hands are shaking badly, and I can see the shock is beginning to set in for Luna too. Cora and Rory are still attached, and Fred gripped the steering wheel so hard that his knuckles were white. We were badly shaken up but otherwise unscathed, thanks to Luna. As we got out of the car, Cedric was the angriest I've ever seen him. He slams the car door shut and socks Fred in the jaw, knocking him to the ground. We rush around the side of the car to stop them, and the rest of us pulled them apart. George helps Fred get up, and Cedric goes to lunge at him again. Luna stops him.
"Ced, look at me," she says. He doesn't, so she holds his face in her hands and turns his head so that he's forced to.
"This was not Fred's fault, and he doesn't deserve to take the blame for it. Nobody could have predicted that we would run out of fuel. That was scary, but we're okay. We're all okay," she says soothingly, and he finally calms down. Fred has a bloody lip and Cedric's middle knuckle was split from punching him, and I felt sick to my stomach. Cora was standing off to the side.
"I don't care if my life depends on it, I'm never getting in that awful car again," she declared, her voice shaking. Cedric walks over to her side in solidarity.
"I'm with Cora on this one," he said. "It might not have been anyone's fault, but we should have died today. If Luna wasn't with us, we'd all be at the bottom of the Atlantic by now." He turns to look at Luna.
"So thank you," Cedric continues, "for doing what you did. That took bravery, real bravery. And for that, we owe you our lives. All of us." Luna smiled, but it wasn't real. She was just as scared as the rest of us.
"It's settled then," she mutters. "No more riding around in the twins' car." We nod and silently and start back to the castle for lunch hour. Luna falls into step with me, and she stops right outside the great hall doors and pulls my sleeve to get my attention.
"Hey," she said. "Can I talk to you?" I nod, and Rory walks over to us.
"Aren't you gonna eat lunch?" he asks.
"We'll come in soon, she just needs to tell me something," I responded.
"Anything she has to say can be said in front of me," he says. He looks to Luna. "Right?" She looks between Rory and I.
"No offense, but it would probably be better if it was just Y/n and I," she said. The light in his face looks as if it's been snuffed out.
"Oh, okay," he said with a plastered-on smile. He disappears through the doors.
"Save seats for us," I call after him. I turn back around to look at Luna. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong," she answers. She won't look at me. "It's about what's right, actually. Well, considering what we've all just been through, with the car running out of fuel and whatnot..." She's stalling.
"Well, what is it?" I interrupt. She looks up at me, surprised.
"These...might not be the best circumstances to discuss this," she began. "But when the car was falling, you- I mean, we-" Luna sighs, getting frustrated with herself. "Well, why did you do it?" I can feel my face burning with embarrassment. Son of a boggart, that's what this is about. I wrack my brain for something to say.
"In my defense, I didn't think I'd live long enough to tell you," I mumble.
"Tell me what?" she asks, tilting her head and flashing a tiny smile. She knows exactly what she's doing.
"That I've had the biggest crush on you since first year," I blurt before I can stop myself. She stares at me, and I couldn't tell whether the look in her eyes was relief or repulsion.
"I didn't know you liked girls," she says. I shrug.
"Nobody does. Not even my family," I respond. "When I was a kid I used to think I was a failure or that I was mad because of it."
"You aren't a failure, Y/n, and you're just as sane as I am. And even if you were both of those things it wouldn't be enough to scare me away." Why did she brush off the fact that I just told her two of the biggest secrets I had?
"But you kissed me back," I say, thinking out loud. This time, her face gets red.
"I know," she whispers. "I did, and I meant to." My heart feels like it's beating out of my chest. Not in a nervous way, though. It was more like I had just run a race, and I could feel my blood pulsing in my fingertips and ears, and the adrenaline was rushing through my veins.
"So, does this mean we-" she says softly.
"Yes," I interrupt with a smile. "Whatever you want, Luna, the answer is yes."
"Swear?" she asked, stepping closer to me. I didn't even dare to breathe as I stood there, staring into her eyes that were inches away from mine.
"I swear," I echo as I nod my head. She makes a big show of pretending to think hard.
"The first thing I want," she said, "is to find Rory and Cora and Ced and the twins and eat lunch."
"As you wish," I reply, grabbing her hand and running into the great hall.
