On Monday we all left for our 2 weeks of spring break, and I was excited to spend most of it with Luna. We'd figured out that we live pretty close to each other, and we'd planned out every day of break down to the second so we could be together for as long as possible. She'd written to her father and had it arranged that I, a "friend" of hers, could come over for dinner one night. I wrote to my mum as well, and when I asked to have Luna over she was more excited than I was; so much so that I gave it to Luna herself to read.
The second I got home on Monday afternoon I rushed up the stairs and got changed into a white puffy blouse and green jeans, counting down the seconds until 2:00 when I would meet Luna on my street corner.
When the time finally came to leave my house, I grabbed my jacket that had a bit of muggle money in the pocket and dash out the door. I hadn't even been away from her for a whole day and I was already looking forward to seeing her, and I saw her standing on the corner with her back to me, wearing a sweater made of what looked like mismatched knitting scraps. She wore her oddly-patterned boots on her feet, blue jeans on her legs, and a deep brown knit cap on her head.
I ran up and threw my arms around her from behind. She turned around and looked at me, startled.
"Don't do that, you scared me half to death," she said as she swatted at my arms, but she was clearly trying not to smile.
"Only half?" I tease. "I must be getting a bit rusty, then." She just rolls her eyes and laughs.
"Where are we going first?"
"Brilliant question," I answer, grabbing her by the hand and starting down the street. We wound up at a park with a pond, where Luna fed one of the ducklings right out of her hand. One of the park rangers started to scold her for it but we ran before we could hear what he was saying, laughing all the way. We then wandered aimlessly around the side streets for a bit, and we happened upon a gas station as it was getting dark. Inside the shop there was loads of everything you could imagine; groceries, ice cream, a milkshake maker, a coffee and tea maker, potato chips, soda, pastries, beer, hot food, cigarettes. Unfortunately for us it was a muggle shop so they didn't have any chocolate frogs or butterbeer, but Luna was thrilled to find that muggles sold their own sort of every-flavor-beans called Jelly Belly. She bought a bag of those and a powdered doughnut, and I got a bag of gummies and a pretzel, along with two bottles of Coca Cola for both of us. We sit on the curb outside the shop to eat our stuff, watching cars go by on the road before us.
"Have you ever driven a car?" Luna asks suddenly as another car zooms by.
"No," I said, taking another bite of my pretzel. "Rory's learning, though, he says he's taking classes for it. I've just never learned."
"I think driving could be fun," she says as she leans her chin in her hands. "Maybe Rory could teach us someday. Or the twins, they can do it too."
"I'd rather learn to drive a muggle car that hasn't almost killed us all," I giggle. I'm not sure why I laughed, though, because I didn't find it funny. Remembering those terrifying seconds was enough to strike something awful in me.
"That's fair," Luna replies. "Until then we'll just have to keep using portkeys."
"Portkeys are probably even better than cars," I point out. "It takes you wherever you'd like in an instant, where muggles could spend hours and hours driving in cars." She nods in agreement and starts eating her doughnut, smiling when she looks up.
"First star, make a wish." Luna pointed to a single glittering speck in the darkening sky. I bow my head as if I was praying, close my eyes and try to think of something to wish for. Fortunately or unfortunately, I wanted for nothing. I had Luna and my friends at Hogwarts, I had mum and Evie, I had Milo, and I was happy with my life. And at long last, from that train of thought came my wish; that I would love my life and the people in it for as long as I live. After my wish was made, I open one eye and peek over at Luna to see if she was still making her wish. She was sitting with her eyes closed, face angled towards the sky, with a little smile on her face as the gentle wind blew her hair back.
"What did you wish for?" I ask quietly, sitting up all the way.
"You know I can't tell you," she replied, leaning towards me. I groan and scoot closer to her.
"Please?" I whine, pulling on her sleeve. She just shakes her head and laughs.
"But then it won't come true," she reminds me. I finally sit back and cross my arms, defeated.
"Have it your way then," I sigh as I drum my fingers against my glass soda bottle, enjoying the comfortable silence between her and I. I try to figure out myself what she'd wished for, but nothing came to mind. As far as I knew she was happy with her life as well, except for the people at school who still think she's mad. Maybe she wished for people to be kinder, I say inside my head.
"Courage," Luna blurted out of nowhere. I swear it's like she can hear my thoughts, the number of times she's done that. I didn't say any of that though, I just look over at her and play dumb.
"Hm?"
"I wished for courage," she said softly, "I need it to tell dad about us."
"Luna," I sigh, scooting close to her again and taking her hand. "You're thinking about it too much. It was scary when I came out to my mum, but look at how she is now. You read that letter she wrote, didn't you?" She laughs a little and nods.
"Exactly. The only thing you need is to relax and don't lose sleep over it," I continue. "And on the absolutely minuscule chance that it ends badly, my mum already loves you and she hasn't even met you yet. She'd let you stay with us in a heartbeat." She intently stares at nothing for a few seconds, deep in thought.
"I want you to be there when I tell him," she said, breaking the silence that had settled over the gas station parking lot.
"Of course. Everything'll turn out fine. It always does," I reply, putting my arm around her shoulders while still holding onto her hand.
When she kissed me I could taste the sugar on her lips from the doughnut.
Dear Reader,
Agh I'm so sorry it took this long to post such a short chapter but the next one will be Luna coming out to her dad and then after that they'll go back to school, do the Romeo And Juliet shows, possibly a few plot twists thrown in there, and then that'll be the end of this story. Speaking of stories, I wrote most of the first chapter of the Rory x Y/n fanfic, and it's called "Just Friends". I was wondering if you wanted me to keep it in my back pocket until I finish this story and then go to that one, or if you want the first chapter now. Either way I'm super excited for this and I literally have an entire list of plot points that I wrote down and AGH so yeah that's really it for now...until next time!!
XOXO
Frankie :)
