I stood by a window staring at the dark world on the other side of the glass, trying to calm myself. How dare Evie talk about Luna that way, someone she'd barely met? She had some nerve, saying those things with no shame. For a moment I contemplated transfiguring myself into a rat and crawling up her legs. Picturing her reaction made me feel a little better, as Evie was terrified of rats. I heard footsteps coming up from behind me.

"I don't want to talk," I say quickly.

"Not even to me?" a familiar voice says back. It was Rory. I smiled.

"I'll make an exception for you," I reply, trying to lighten the mood.

"Are you okay?" he asked, his face ridden with concern.

"I'll survive," I say with a sigh. "I wish my sister and that William-Head-Boy-Of-Ravenclaw character wouldn't be so judgemental."

"This seems like the right time to tell you that she didn't mean it and she isn't herself right now for whatever reason, but I can't. You know her better than me," Rory said soothingly. "So is this the sort of thing she'd do?" I think for a minute, not sure whether I should lie and keep up Evie's image or tell the truth and drag her through the mud.

"Sometimes," I answer hesitantly. "Back home when she had her friends over to our house I'd listen through the wall to all of them gossiping about other people, sometimes even me. Who cheated on who, who's love charm backfired, who was using magic outside of school, and a lot of things that were even worse. Evie's my sister and I love her, but I just don't know why she acts like this." Rory shrugs his shoulders.

"Neither do I. People do strange things for strange reasons, I guess. But what happened in there wasn't your fault, and you did the right thing standing up for that other girl," Rory said to me with a grin. "And if anything else should happen between you and Evie, I'll be on your side. Always." I hug him.

"Thank you," I whisper into his shoulder. He seemed surprised at first, but he eventually hugged me back. I realized that I felt closer to this scrawny little stranger than I did to my sister that I've known my whole life, and the guilt stabbed straight through my chest like a knife. Just ignore it, y/n, I told myself in my head. Maybe if I ignore it, it will go away. But it didn't. Evie's vile words ran through my head again, and I seethed at the thought of them. We parted.

"McGonagall said we'd pick up our robes after the feast in the laundry wing," Rory said. "It ought to be over soon, wanna get ours before it gets busy?" I smile at him and nod in agreement. We started to walk down the huge hallway, side by side.

"Any idea where we're going?" I ask.

"Not a clue," he answered with a shrug. I laugh, and so began our long journey through the castle in search of the laundry wing.
