=Chapter Eighteen=

The main reason that deer are often killed by automobiles is because when they are hit with the bright headlights, they freeze, unsure of what to do.

For the first time in your life, you finally understood the meaning of that phrase.

You were terrified.

Lily, or what used  to be Lily, stood in front of you, arms limp and a strange black liquid seeping from his eyes. He seemed almost zombie-like, so much so that you were convinced that he would come for your brain.

Misono's face flashed through your mind. You had never seen another person looks so scared in your life.

Your mind went completely blank and your voice became lodged in the back of your throat.

Then, you heard a loud, high pitched cackle come from somewhere above you. It was a laugh that you'd know anywhere.

"TSUBAKI!!!" You screamed, leaping to your feet, your voice returning to you. "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!"

The laughter continued for a few more seconds before abruptly cutting off.

"Booring."

Spinning around, you desperately looked for the source of his voice, but it was no use. Then you looked up. On the roof stood a maid holding a phone out at arms length. The voice on the other end spoke again.

"Hello again, (Y/n), dear older brother!" Tsubaki said. "How have you two been? I've been fine, thanks for asking."

"We didn't," Kuro said loudly from the edge of the roof.

Your SerVamp hopped off the building, landing on the ground beside you.

"What. Did you do. To Lily?" You asked, malice dripping from your voice.

"Ugh, did no one explain this to you yet?" He groaned from the other end. "Fine, guess I'll have to do it. Not that I want too..."

There was a pause.

"Dear (Y/n), the rules of this game  are rather unclear, but I'll do my best to explain them to you. I don't like repeating myself, so be quiet and try to keep up with that feeble human brain of yours."

"What did you just call-!" You started.

"I said be quiet. Ugh, humans, they never listen..."

"GET ON WITH IT!" You screamed.

"Fine, fine, fine, no need to shout. When you signed the contract, you gave your SerVamp two things, a name and an item, correct? These forge the link between an Eve and their SerVamp!"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" You say, holding up your hands. "What are you talking about?! How could I sign a contract with Kuro when I never gave him anything?!"

Tling. Tling Tling.

You looked over at Kuro. He was sitting on the ground like a cat, while holding up a long string that was tied around his neck, a small gold bell on the end.

Tling Tling Tling.

Realization hit you with the force of a speeding train.

"I DID! I GAVE HIM A BELL! A STUPID! LITTLE! BELL!" You yelled.

"Hey, I like my bell," Kuro remarked, changing into a cat.

Tsubaki continued. "We vampires represent "sin", while our Eves represent "reason". If the item binding a SerVamp to their master is broken, the SerVamp's body will, in simplest terms, regurgitate the jin that has been stored inside."

"I see, so that's what that large pillar of light was..." You said in a philosophical tone of voice. "That just leaves me with one more question..."

"Oh?" Tsubaki said. "And what is that?"

"WHAT HAPPENED TO LILY?!" You shouted.

He sighed. "Were you not paying attention? I just told you, his body is expelling the jin-"

"OH, I HEARD THAT LOUD AND CLEAR!" You screamed, cutting him off. "NOW TELL ME WHY LILY LOOKS LIKE A MONSTER!"

There was a loud cackle from the other end of the call. It soon developed into full-blown maniacal laughter. Then it abruptly stopped.

"Bored now."

"TSUBAKI! DON'T YOU DARE-!"

"Bye, (Y/n)."

And then he hung up.

The maid looked at the phone screen, back to you, and then turned around and walked off.

"Hey! Get back here and call your boss back!" You yelled, even though you knew that she was already gone.

"(Y/n), I think your hands are too full to go chasing after her," Kuro commented. "Remember, you now have to deal with Lily."

"Crap!" You said, spinning around to face the deranged looking vampire. "I completely forgot about Misono!"

You glanced at your SerVamp. "Kuro, will you help me take him-"

"(Y/N)!" He shouted.

You turned back just in time to see Lily charge towards you, fingers as sharp as knives. You pulled out your broom and used it to stop his hands from turning your throat into an accordion. Unfortunately, the force of his charge sent the two of you flying across the courtyard. In the split second that you were airborne, Lily managed to grab your arm, and without any trouble, he threw you to the side, directly at a brick wall. Your back connected with the stone harshly, causing the air to leave your lungs. You swore you heard a few cracks.

Collapsing onto the ground, you began choking from the lack of air. In a flash, Kuro was in front of you, shielding you with his body.

"(Y/n)! Look at me!" He said, holding up your head so he could look you in the eyes. "Are you okay?!"

"I just... got thrown... against a wall... you tell me..." You managed to say weakly.

Looking over his shoulder, you saw Lily approaching.

Before you could warn Kuro, Lily grabbed his shoulder and threw the older vampire behind him, his gaze never leaving you. He came closer, his claws twitching. Just as he was about to charge, a dark hole appeared on his chest, and something began to emerge. It was a hand.

Lily jerked unnaturally, almost as if he was in pain.

You instantly knew whose hand it was.

"Misono-!" You gasped.

Forcing yourself up, you reached out and grabbed the hand tightly. Using your weight, you began to pull, and then, slowly, the other boy began to emerge. First his arm, then his head, his torso, and finally, his legs. When he was fully out, the two of you fell back, with him falling on top of you.

"Mi... sono..."

Looking up, you made eye contact with Lily. The real Lily.

He looked sad.
