"Stay still Emma," Haelan spoke, while slowly pulling the string that used to keep my wound closed out. "It's almost out."
"Easy for you to say!" I grunted, gripping to the sheets on the bed. He got the last stretch off letting me breath out.
"See that wasn't so bad," he grinned, to my deadpan face. He began putting his supplies back. It had been a week since the breakup. Peter hasn't come back to check on me at all since. Being forced to wait here while I healed was the worst. Dreading each day until he would bring me back to my hometown. He can't just do that!

"I have thought about the situation," he broke out. "He wants you gone from here ultimately because of his concern for your safety. Saying that the simple answer would be to teach you self defence, but he thinks that impossible for one your size. From my perspective he taught the wrong techniques. A crossbow might be a good self defence weapon but with the size of bolts you are shooting out nothing bigger than a squirrel is gonna feel it."
"Hey, that's not fair!" I burst out. I still hated Peter for the way he treated me, but I wasn't gonna let Healan talk about him that way.
"Hear me out, I'm not trying to discard his ideas. It's just for you in particular we need to look at it from a different perspective. We need to be realistic. You need to know your boundaries. That doesn't mean admitting defeat, it just means accepting who you are. I can't fly, fit through small spaces or breathe underwater, but there are so many other things I can do. We just have to find out what you can do and how to turn that into your advantage."
"That sounds great, thank you for helping me." I said smiling at him.
"Don't mention it," he replied, while petting my head with his thumb. He smiled back before returning to a straight face.
"I'm not strong or fast across longer distances."
"But you're small, mobile and agile. We can work with that. Let's start with a simple scenario. When you were attacked by that owl you said that you wanted to hide by a tree that was far away. That means you had to run to it from a distance, right?"
"You saying it outloud makes it sound stupid."
"A bit," he pointed out before continuing. "You should have known you wouldn't outrun it from that distance. Instead you should have slowly climbed down and crawled to the tree. Even if it tried to grab you, there would have been time for you to dodge it, or fire at a weak point like you did after you were grabbed."
"I see that now..." I almost whispered. "It's just in the moment I couldn't think clearly."
"You were scared," he interrupted.
"Yeah," I sighed.
"It's understandable, but next time you might not have that luxury. You have to learn to control your emotions, your mind." He paused for a moment. "Let me give you another scenario. If I were chasing you around this room, how would you get away?"
"Hm, that's tricky," I said. "If it were Peter's house there would be many escape routes that I'm familiar with, but from what I can see here there is only one way out and that's through the door."
"One step at a time, how would you get to the ground?"
"I would slide off the bed from this side," I said pointing at the wall closets to the bed. "From there I just have to run under the furniture until I reach the door."
"What if I tried to grab or block you?" he questioned.
"Then I would either dodge or jump over them since you can't exactly see where I am. When I reach the end where I can't hide anymore I would stab you with my needle at your next grab and use that as a distraction to run under you and make it to the door."
"Good job kid. Of course that's easier said than done, but you're starting to think more strategically. When you master it you will be able to fend for yourself." My eyes began getting watery, which Haelan took notice to. "Now you won't get there like that so let me give you another scenario. Wait, let me think..."
"Yes sir," I giggled as a response.
