Disappointment engulfed the girl's chest, she stood at the door guarding the entrance to her home with a stern look on her face. She couldn't say that she was surprised to see Colette stand there with that hopeful look on her face, it was only sooner than she expected. Was she pleased that her so-called girlfriend showed up? The look on her visage she was sure issued a good answer.
"Hi," Beth forced herself to say, folding her arms across her chest. The door barely stood opened, giving little to no view from where Colette stood.
"Hey, can we talk?"
"Not that I care what you have to say, but sure."
"Right," Colette tittered looking away.
It was later in the afternoon. The pastel colours in the sky left the earth refulgent as the sun took a dip into the horizon. The breeze which danced around held a sharp prickle as it drifted against Colette, so she hugged her jacket to herself."I came to apologise, can we talk inside?"
"No."
"Beth, please I'm sorry. It's why I'm here, I want you to understand what happened and why I kinda dipped."
"I understand clearly. You're as indecisive as they come, Colette. You're selfish and incapable of seeing past your nose,"
In the girl's perspective, Colette realized how true those harsh words were. The reason Beth formed such a skewed opinion of her was because of how poorly she'd been treated in the last couple of months and again, the feeling of being a disappointment crashed against her chest.
"You're right,"
"Yeah, I know I'm right. You run off completely after going MIA for three days and when I tried to find you, your landlord told me that you took all of your shit and left. Even your mother didn't know where you were. How can you explain any of it to anyone?"
"I can't," Colette replied solemnly. The look on Beth's face was enough to slice her deep. There had been hatred in the girl's brown eyes.
"Why do you insist on being so vague, is it me? Am I so awful that you can't just be honest for once?"
"No, no it's not you,"
"Then who the fuck is it and what do you want Colette?" The girl's eyes were filled with tears but she was angry enough to not let them fall. Beth furiously pushed the tears away, her stupid girlfriend didn't deserve them at all.
"You said what you had to and I said what I needed to, so why are you here?"
"Because I can't remember our interaction," Lied Colette. She didn't know because no one ever told her what it was that they said to the poor girl. She was utterly oblivious and in her face it backfired.
"I never expect you to remember anything."
"Please, just tell me what happened,"
"After a few days, you told me you moved. You quit your job and you took all of your things, including Lottie and you left, said you needed some change. When I asked where you were, you were vague so I told you never to contact me again and you were okay with that."
"So technically, you broke up with me?"
"Yeah. I can't keep doing this with you over and over again and I hope you get it. Every week, every month it's something different between us. I know you're having a shitty year, so am I but you don't see me putting you through all of the crap,"
"I'm sorry,"
"No, I'm sorry! I should've done this sooner." Beth interjects.
"Stay away from me, Colette. You want to go tour the whole fucking country? You want to avoid everyone, you want to hold onto the animosity you feel for your parents? Go ahead. Just don't come back to me when you're done. Don't pretend like you need me either when clearly you don't."
