My eyes felt glued tight and stung. They were still puffy from crying last night. Light flooded in from the window – it was the most unwelcome guest – morning. It wasn’t like I had work to go to or anything so I begrudgingly got up to pull the curtains closed. As I flopped back on my bed, my phone buzzed.  Ugh. I reached for it to see who was calling me.

Mom.

“Noooo thank you,” I mumbled and threw it across the room. After a minute or two it buzzed again letting me know I had a voice mail. With my head comfortably placed between my mattress and pillow, I soon fell back asleep.

A few hours later I awoke to a knock on my front door. After debating whether or not to answer it I decided not to. It was probably just the landlord trying to collect this month’s rent. I really didn’t want to see that large a chunk of money leave my account.

On the other hand, what if it were Louis? Wait, it couldn’t be, he wouldn’t just stop by unannounced so early in the morning. I glanced up at my digital clock…okay so maybe two in the afternoon isn’t morning. There was another knock on the door and I sat up in bed, wondering if maybe it could be Louis.

I look horrible though, I couldn’t let him see me like this. I got out of bed and went to the bathroom. Avoiding looking at my reflection, I brushed my teeth and took a quick shower. After getting out, I looked toward the box that still covered the spider.

Nah, he can stay there, I still don’t want to look at him.

I walked to the kitchen and poured myself a bowl of dry cereal and glanced toward the front door where there was a little slip of paper that had been shoved under the slit. Excitement coursed through me, maybe Louis did come by after all and he gave me his phone number! I ran over to it, but as I read what it wrote I quickly fell from my high of joy, it read, Stevens! Rent needs to be paid by tomorrow!

I left my cereal on the counter and got online to pay my rent electronically.

Well today couldn’t get any worse. I just felt like shit. Not wanting to be in a place that reflected how I looked, I pulled on some jeans and a sweatshirt and sneakers and went for a walk. It rained heavily the night before, washing away most of the snow, now there were just piles of it on sidewalks and street corners to keep it off the roads. I kept my hood up, partly to keep warm and partly to hide the fact that I wasn’t wearing makeup. Maybe taking a walk wasn’t such a good idea. It was more of a work out, trying to maneuver my way around the snow piles and not get hit by cars.

I looked up a little and a particularly big pile that took up the entire side walk and was about three feet high awaited me. The road was particularly busy so I really had no choice but to climb over the big heap of snow. I managed to get to the top but on my way down my foot slipped and I tumbled down, landing hard on my ankle. A sharp pain shot through my foot and it was all I could do to not tear up. Gingerly I stood up, using a nearby speed limit sign for support. I hadn’t gotten too far from my building, it was still in sight. Awkwardly and with my face red with embarrassment I crawled over the snow hill and hobbled along until I reached the stairs to the building door.

Nervously I took hold of the railing and hopped up with my good foot. The next step had a patch of ice right in front of me and I was unsure as to how to get around it. Suddenly, the door opened and Liam walked out, caught off guard by me being right in front of him.

“Alright there, Jovi?”

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine, I’m good, how are you?” crap, even I could hear the pain in my voice. My ankle hurt so badly, and talking seemed to unleash just how bad it was. Before I could stop anything, tears were heating my face as they fell.
