Today was my first day at work. I had called a cab and was just dropped off in front of the building. I wished Louis worked today, but he had to be at rehearsal for Grease. I walked in the store and Judy looked up from one of the registers. “Hey Jovi! Have a Happy Christmas?” she asked warmly. “Yeah, I did, how about you?”
“Oh it was lovely!” she smiled happily. I followed her to the back room where she gave me my name tag. After that she showed me all around the store and how things were organized. “We get a shipment in every month so when that comes around in January you’ll learn the in’s and out’s of that whole process,” she explained as she led me over to the register. It wasn’t a massive store, but it wasn’t tiny either, but they only had about four to five people working at a time. I was taught all about checking people out and how to work the café.
Back in the break room was the monthly schedule where people would write in the times they could work or fill in for others. “Always use pencil because as you see, things can change a lot,” she said indicating to all the eraser marks. “Today we only have myself, you and Monica working because the few days after the holidays are usually pretty slow. She was right, for my whole eight hour shift, we only had about twenty people come through. During my lunch break I got a text from Liam.
Liam: Hey! Have a Happy Christmas?
Me: Yeah! Did you? Oh, by the way, I made you some cookies for Christmas, there is a spare key on top of my door frame, you can use it to get them, and use if I’m ever being attacked by spiders and you need to rescue me:)
Liam: Hahaha, that is sweet of you, thank you! I actually was wondering if you could help me out with something.
Me: Sure, what is it?
Liam: Mine and Danielle’s anniversary is coming up the day after New Year’s and she wants our gifts to each other to be homemade. Need I say more?
Me: Oh that is cute! Have you come up with any ideas at all? Or are you shooting blanks?
Liam: Blanks. All blanks.
Me: Okay, make a list of everything that reminds you of her, and things that mean something to you as a couple. I get off work at 6, so when I get home I’ll just come over to your place, sound good?”
Liam: Thanks loads! I would be freaking out without you!
The rest of the day was pretty uneventful after I got over my nerves. The other girl working there, Monica, she was nice enough but I don’t think I really like her. She seems like the type of person to always try and seem better or worse than you. I mean like I told her I moved here from Iowa, and she said she has lived in Australia, France, and South Africa. I mentioned Louis and I have been friends now for a couple weeks and she said they’d known each other for a year. I mentioned how my ankle broke but how it wasn’t too bad (according to Andy’s amateur opinion) and she had to say how she broke her arm, leg, rib, and almost her collar bone once. I may be just over-reacting, and maybe it was the tone in her voice that got me, but still. She isn’t someone I would want to spend time with outside of work.
When I got to my building I hobbled up the stairs, thankful it hadn’t snowed since because it would have been a bitch to walk around outside with my crutches then. I knocked on Liam’s door and he opened it with a cookie sticking out of his mouth and another one in his hand. “They’re really good,” he said spraying crumbs at me. “Sorry!” he said swallowing brushing them off my face and shoulders. “You’re a ham,” I said laughing as I walked in his flat which looked exactly like mine, but with more furniture and homey items. I sat down on his couch, and noticed a picture of him and a girl with a lot of curly dark brown hair. “Is this Danielle?” I asked. “Yeah,” he said with a smile. “You guys look adorable together, I have her pan for her by the way!”
