After getting the place cleaned up a bit, and taking a shower (which is very hard to do with a cast. I ended up just sticking my leg out of the tub which made for an awkward shower experience) it was about 2:30. I still hadn’t called my mom back. Doing the math in my head, it was about 5:30am at home. I figured I might as well call and leave a message, just so I don’t have to talk to them right now, but I don’t get bitched at for not calling back.

The phone rang and rang and rang and finally got to voicemail. “Hello, you’ve reached Amy Steven’s voicemail. Please leave your name and number and I will get back to you soon!” came my mom’s fake cheerful voice.

“Hi mom, sorry it’s taken so long to call back and that I’m doing so so early for you guys. Things have been busy over here and the time difference makes it hard to call at a convenient time. Hope you and dad are doing well….Love you.” I hung up. Hmm, what should I do today? I knew I should stay off my foot as much as possible but I was feeling good and motivated and I wanted to do something productive. I picked my phone up again and dialed my landlord, Fred. He was a grumpy old man and didn’t really like people, but I think he was just lonely and didn’t really know how be anything other than that.

The phone rang twice before a gruff “Hello,” answered.

“Hi Fred, this is Jovi from flat 202, I was wondering if I would be able to paint my walls?” he grumbled a bit about kids wanting to change everything. “I won’t paint them any insane colors. It’s just they are very yellow and the paint is already pealing because I think the last tenants were smokers."

“Aye, they were,” his accent was thick and sometimes I had a hard time understanding him. “So what do you say, Fred?”

“Mm. Only white. No colors.”

“Thanks Fred. Hey, by the way, what are your favorite kinds of cookies?” I suddenly got the idea to bake the old guy some cookies for Christmas. I wasn’t sure if he had any family, and I knew how that felt being over here. At least I could do something nice for someone at this time of year. I didn’t have a Christmas tree or anything, and it was the gloomiest holiday I’ve had so far. Doing something nice for someone else would make it feel a little more cheerful though. “Peanut butter, why?”

“Just wondering, alright, well have a nice day, Fred!” he hung up and I texted Louis.

Me: When do you get off work?”

A few minutes later he replied back with,

Lou: 7, want to hang out then?

Me: Yeah, if you want to come over after work that would be great. Oh and can you pick up a can of white paint on your way?” I want to paint my gross walls. I’ll pay you back when you get here.

Lou: Yeah sure. What do you want to do about dinner?

I thought about it. I had food, and I had ingredients, but nothing substantial like meat or potatoes. Mainly just frozen dinners and other various microwavable things.

Me: Uhh…I have some frozen dinners in the freezer… I was kind of ashamed of that. Of my poorness. Hopefully I got the job tomorrow. Then I could afford better food and start eating healthier.

Lou: Do any of them have carrots?

I checked, and indeed a couple of them did.

Me: A few yeah. If you don’t like them I have ones without them.

Lou: No! I absolutely love carrots:)

I laughed. Good to know.

Me: Okay, haha, I’ll see you tonight then:)
