"If loving them meant losing herself, Katherine had already decided she would pay the price."

Katherine's heart was beating so violently that she could hear it.

Every footstep seemed to land in time with the relentless pounding inside her chest, each breath coming shorter and sharper as she hurried through the corridors of Hogwarts. Her wand remained clenched tightly in her hand, her fingers aching around the handle, but she barely noticed the discomfort.

She was looking for people.

Anyone.

A familiar face.

A voice.

A glimpse of someone she knew standing upright and breathing.

Anything that would reassure her that the people she loved were still alive.

Every corridor she passed seemed to contain another reminder that the castle was no longer the Hogwarts she knew. Doors stood open where they should have been closed. Pieces of shattered stone littered the floors. Smoke drifted lazily through some of the passageways, catching in the torchlight and turning the air hazy.

Somewhere in the distance, spells were still being fired.

But the battle had changed.

It no longer sounded like the beginning.

It sounded like the aftermath.

Katherine finally reached the entrance to the Great Hall.

She slowed.

For a moment, she simply stood there.

The enormous doors were hanging open.

The Great Hall beyond them looked almost unrecognisable.

The long House tables had been pushed aside, leaving the centre of the room almost completely clear. Students and members of the Order moved between makeshift beds, carrying supplies, speaking in hushed voices and trying to determine who could still be helped.

The wounded had been brought here.

And those who couldn't be saved had been brought here too.

Katherine's stomach turned.

She swallowed hard before stepping inside.

Her eyes immediately began scanning the room.

One face after another.

People she recognised.

People she didn't.

Some were crying.

Some were sitting in stunned silence.

Others were desperately trying to help those around them.

Katherine felt strangely detached from it all.

She had spent the entire night preparing herself for this.

She had imagined Fred lying somewhere in the castle.

She had imagined Harry.

Ron.

Hermione.

Sirius.

Remus.

Arthur.

George.

Everyone.
