"ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THIS?" Rosalie asks Gemma as they stand outside of the high school on graduation day.
"I have to, for my baby brother," Gemma replies.
Rosalie grabs Gemma's hand and Emmett grabs her other and they enter. The scent of human blood hits Gemma like a tidal wave and a tsunami at the same time. She inhales and she holds her breath as she sits beside Karen and Charlie. Karen smiles as she grabs her daughter's hand, not bothered by the cold while Jessica starts her valedictorian speech.
"When we were five, they asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up. Our answers were thinks like astronaut, president... or in my case, Princess. When we were ten, they asked again and we answered - rockstar, cowboy, or in my case, gold medalist. But now that we've grown up, they want real answers. Well, how about this: who the bell knows!?"
The crowd hoots and hollers. Gemma wolf whistles at her human friend and she even claps for Jessica. Emmett is sitting with Chamberlin, Esme, and Carlisle, keeping an eye on Gemma.
"This isn't the time to make hard and fast decisions, it's the time to make mistakes," Jessica continues. "Take the wrong train, and get somewhere chill. Fall in love - a lot. Mayor in philosophy because there's no way to make a career out of that. Change your mind. Then change it again, because nothing is permanent."
Gemma only wishes that were true. She wishes there was a cure to immortality. If there was, she'd take it in an instant or she'd give it to Rosalie so that she can be human again like she wants.
"So make as many mistakes as you can," Jess continues. "That way, someday Pam when they ask again what we want to be... we won't have to guess. We'll know." ✖️✖️✖️
"Mikey!"
Mike smiles as he bounds o Ed and hugs his sister and spins her around. Gemma laughs as she hugs him. Mike pulls away and he looks at his sister. Thankfully for Alice, Gemma is wearing contacts that match her human eye color so Mike wouldn't know a difference.
"We're graduates!" Mike boasts.
"Yes!" Gemma shrieks and the Newton siblings hug once more.
Gemma is so proud of herself for making it through the ceremony and now being this close to her brother. Her human brother. She's not at all tempted.
"I am so proud of you, my babies!" Karen coos as she walks over while Charlie talks to Bella. "My two biggest accomplishments."
"Mom!" The siblings complain, Mike blushes wildly and Gemma would be, too, if she were a human.
"I love you, my babies," Karen coos.
"I love you, too, mom, always," Gemma coos.
"And forever," Mike adds. "We'll always love you, too. If not more."
Karen smiles warmly and she hugs both of her kids. Carlisle and Esme smile in awe at the family.
"She's doing so good," Jasper says as he approaches them. "If she didn't have us..."
"No," Emmett speaks up, "if she didn't have you as a best friend and mentor, man, she'd be screwed."
Jasper watches as Gemma walks and laughs with Mike and they walk over to Jessica and Mrs. Stanley. Jess and Gemma hug and Angela and Eric soon joint them, along with Tyler. The Cullens stand back and let Gemma reunite with her friends since her urges aren't bad at all right now. But little to the Cullens know, she's holding her breath so that she doesn't freak and slip.
