The Caution

This wasn't your first time on a ship by any means but it was definitely different than any other time.

In the past when you hopped from one island to another, it was always either on some kind of cargo ship or a marine one. The latter was rare, usually only allowed by the kindest of marine captains and other higher ups when you fed them white lies when it was time to move on.

On those ships, you were treated like a guest. You received temporary private quarters and though they were usually small, they were always separate from the rest of the marines. You were never required to help with any work, though you still offered to do so to at least avoid angry scowls from the not so kind marines. Besides, you were never one to lay about anyway. Working while on the ships felt like you were paying your way to a new island. Besides treatment, the feel of the ships were always different than Kid's too. There was always prestine order. Everyone had a particular purpose, a certain job to do and they always executed them well.

As for the cargo ships, those were a little more similar to this. But even then, there were the glaring differences.

The first had to be the killing. A week on Kid's ship and you'd managed to run into three others, including the marine one on your first night. The second two were small time pirate crews with terrible enough luck to be caught within Kid's clutches. Needless to say, you'd spilt more blood the past week than you had in the last year. The second noticable thing had to be the lack of order. Sure there was always someone in the crows nest to keep a look out but you had a feeling that was more for Kid's sake. He hated missing out on potential fights.

But besides that, chores seemed to be only done when things bothered the higher ups. The floors were finally too sticky to walk across comfortably? You could bet Wire would be yelling at someone to mop them. Ropes and sails weren't checked until something snapped? Heat was bound to be breathing down the more able bodied men's necks to fix them. There were many other things the men on the ship seemed to wait to take care of until absolutely necessary but what blew you away the most was everything still functioned well despite the lack of regular maintenance.

At least the more important things were taken care of like clockwork. Killer always had dinner done around the same time, the rest of the day it was every man for himself when it came to food. Cannons and other weapons were always kept clean and ready for any possible future fight. That didn't surprise you any.

And then there was the constant brawls.

You figured with them being pirates, the occasional tussle would pop up here and there. But you didn't expect it to be a constant occurrence. Every day it was either one man getting pissed at another or just two guys wanted to blow off some steam from being cooped up on the ship. They were always bloody and no one ever held back. The only set rules for the brawls seemed to be that only fists were allowed, no weapons of any kind. You'd still already seen quite a few broken bones and bloody noses come out of the fights. It was hard to understand how the crew could still fight others while being in a constant state of hurt.

All in all, the world of pirating was something you were still learning about.

Most of the men let you keep to yourself for the most part and waited for you to engage them in conversations. That gave you more of a chance to observe from a distance and figure out exactly how friendly you wanted to get with most of them. Sure you wanted to stick around with this crew, especially with Kid being it's captain, but you didn't want to get too invested in anyone until after they'd experienced your first shift. There was always the possibility of them deciding you actually weren't worth the trouble.

So for the entirety of the week on the ship, you people watched. You learned about the people that stood out the most and the inner social workings of the ship until you were sure you were comfortable enough to begin really trying to be a part of the crew. And in all honesty, this wasn't something special you were doing with just them. It was a process you went through with every new place you'd go, if only for the sake of making sure you could stay for a prolonged period of time.
