"Beast or not, one little village girl killing off an entire island's inhabitants is impressive." Kid leaned back, hooking his feet under the table to keep himself from falling as he nodded slowly.
It was a genuine compliment from him, not an attempt to get a rise out of you. But it still didn't sit right. You'd slaughtered many innocent people that day and you were sure it was your feelings for Kid that made you willing to shrug off what he said instead of snapping at him. That and you understood he lacked tact when it came to things like this anyway.
"If that's what you want to call it. Either way, I left after that. I couldn't stay on that island....I moved on, hopping from place to place for a few years, you know the rest from there."
"Let's go back to all the bullshit leading up to your shift." Kid was once again focused. "Stuff started getting weird after you went to the abandoned house. Your friends weren't with you all the time then, right?"
"At the house? We were all kind of spooked so we stuck together pretty well."
"Didn't you say one wandered off?"
"Lavinia did for a short while but she wouldn't do anything." You began to feel defensive. She was your childhood friend, the one you felt closest to and you didn't like where he was going with this. "And there was nothing in the house that was suspicious anyway."
Kid let out a huff as scooted forward and hunched over the table to get closer. His eyes had sharpened until he was staring you down, practically scowling.
"Bullshit. Look, devil fruits appear at random after the past user dies. They can pop up anywhere there's fruit. You said the kitchen had been gone through again and she was the only person that split from you guys."
Now it was your turn to scowl. "Just because she was checking out the kitchen again doesn't make her the right person. Besides, I killed off the whole village before I left, remember? No one on that island could have done it."
"You were just saying you weren't sure if killing the person would lift your curse. Maybe you killed them and it's permanent."
That hadn't dawned on you as a possibility and suddenly, you felt like all this delving into your past had been for nothing. There was a strong possiblity that that was exactly what happened.
The realization must have shown on your face. Kid let out a short, incoherent grumble before speaking up again.
"You weren't fully paying attention to everyone you killed right? There's a chance some people got away."
"I dunno....." You weren't sure about anything at this point. "All I really remember about that night was just....I killed a lot of people."
"If the person that cursed you was smart enough to make an entire village superstitious without being caught, they may have been smart enough to avoid you."
"I guess that's a possibility." You nodded slowly. While you now were planning for the worst, you found some hope in what he said.
"So that girl who left you guys alone for a while, at that house. She went to the kitchen and came back shortly after."
"Yeah."
"Didn't you mention that there was a bunch of food in there?"
"Rotted, but yes."
"Then there was a chance that a devil fruit was in there somewhere."
"Wouldn't it have gone bad or something? Everything else was completely inedible."
"You don't know shit about devil fruits, do you?" Once again, he looked rather annoyed. Kid wasn't the most patient of men and your ignorance seemed to be testing what little patience he had.
