The day moved on like every single one before it. Your mother woke you, not long before sunrise, to begin the morning chores. Animals needed to be looked after and breakfast had to be made. On your island, rarely visited by outsiders, things had hardly developed to the grandeur that the vast majority of the rest of the world and that being said, much of the social constructs had stayed relatively outdated. The women took care of things at home while the men would go out to work.
That meant you were in the midst of being taught the proper ways to handle the farm. Your mother nagged at you the whole way outside, reminding you to get dressed faster but don't forget an extra layer as there was a cold nip in the air this morning. Once you'd managed to quickly yet quietly slip into your boots, you walked out into the crisp air, feet crunching across the frost covered grass to the old barn.
At the same time, your mother was hot on your heels, throwing a shawl over her shoulders as she listed the chores you'd take care of so she could do the rest. Divide and conquer and in theory, everything could be done by the time the sun, and your father, was up. Then, you'd help your mom make breakfast and take care of the house chores. After that, the day was yours to do as you pleased. And it was that that drove you to work your best.
You were excited to spend the day with your friends as you'd made plans to explore a long abandoned home at the edge of town, one no one dared to step foot in on account of the terrifying stories of spirits that accompanied it. That being said, taking the time to investigate it had been strictly forbidden as well, this was something you had all agreed to do in secret. The village elders had warned many times that doing so may disrupt the gods in some unknown way but you weren't too sure if you even believed in the local deities and had always brushed off their tales. It would be nice to prove them and their gods wrong by going into the home and coming out unscathed.
So you worked on your chores fast, cleaning out the animal stalls and laying out fresh straw for the day. The small collection of cattle, goats, and sheep were then turned out into the pasture to graze until they'd eventually be let back in later in the evening. From there, you helped your mother with the chickens and just like she'd planned, you finished in time to have breakfast going when your dad was in the process of stumbling out of his room, only half awake.
"Okay, so chores and shit." Kid interrupted you. "If that's all just your normal stuff, can we get to something that may actually tell us something?"
"I was getting to that." You huffed. He was sometimes too impatient even for you.
"Skip to it then, the abandoned house bullshit. That's different, right?"
"Yeah, that was our first and only time going there."
Four of you were standing at the edge of the clearing, glancing around the foreboding building. No one wanted to be the first to venture closer yet no one wanted to admit their fear either. You all talked big and brave until the moment of truth came.
The trees surrounding it were dead and brittle. A strong enough gust of wind could push them down, you were sure of it. The house itself was completely ruined, surrounded by tall, untouched grass and weeds. Ivy grew along the walls, snuck into the cracks and climbed up high enough to reach the concave roof. It was sunken in but somehow still was supported enough to have not collapsed. There was no front door, just a few slabs of rotting wood nailed over the opening. The windows were all shattered or missing completely and from your view outside, you could make out some of the ruined furniture inside.
"So....we go in?" The only boy in the group, Eli asked. His dull brown eyes flicked from the face of the house back to the rest of you.
"There's no way I'm going in first." Aylin shook her head and took a step back. She was physically the most grown out of all of you but besides that, she was still just as much of a kid as the rest of you.
