I debated breaking this up into a second and third part as it was getting pretty long but decided against it in the end. I originally thought I could do all of this in one part. Boy was I wrong lol

"So those three people were the only ones you spent time around?" Kid was gnawing at the end of his thumbnail, probably thinking harder than he had in a long time.

You were honestly surprised with how invested he was in this. Besides his couple interruptions, he'd been an attentive listener and seemed to be picking your story apart in his head, really looking for any details that stood out to him.

"Them and my parents. We were a pretty solitary group."

"And that didn't change up until the time this 'curse' first took place?"

"Yeah. You're thinking one of them had something to do with it?"

"Well yeah." He growled. "Weren't you listening when I said a devilfruit user needs to be in contact to use their abilities?"

"What about ones like yours? You can use it at a distance."

"Sure but if I wanted to hurt you I'd need to know where you're at. You'd need to be in sight for a good shot. The same thing should apply to anyone else; they need to either know where you're at, have eyes on you, or be able to physically touch you."

"Right." You sighed. It was unsettling thinking someone close to you would be willing to do something so horrible.

"How many of you knew about devil fruits?"

"None as far as I know. I only learned about them when I left home."

Devil fruit users were common to come across on the seas, especially on the Grand Line. But for the rest of the world and most normal people, they went widely unheard of. With your home island being so closed off, it was only more so the case that something like that went unknown.

"So in theory, whoever got a hold of the one that cursed you didn't know what they were doing. Something should have been happening around you to suggest as much."

You grinned and leaned back slightly, hoping to stay out of Kid's reach. "You know, you're smarter than you look."

"Shut up." As expected, he made a swipe for you, smirking all the while. "No one ever said I was a fuckin' idiot."

"No but I figured Killer was the brains of this ship."

"As if." He scoffed. "Get back to business and figure out what else went on or I might change my mind on helping you."

"Alright, alright." You fell to silence as you gathered your thoughts.

When things started going south, you were too caught up in the moment to dwell on the events that led up to it. But now that you had the time to really reminisce about the events, things were beginning to stick out to you.

The past few days after your exploration of the abandoned house were filled with strange occurances. They were small enough to almost go unnoticed but disturbing enough that when they were discovered, whispered explainations flowed through the town at an incredible pace. The common consensus was the gods weren't happy with something, though no one could explain about what. They just prayed things wouldn't get worse before the next full moon.

Every full moon was a time to honor the gods, celebrate all the good that had happened in the past month in their names. Food from harvest was always shared among the families, children would play well into the night, there was dancing and music, and yours family in particular was tasked the the most "important" part of it all. Every month they'd kill an animal as an offering of appeasement to the gods, to continue with the good luck the village received.
