The Lost Chance

The Connection

   After months of watching over Camila, Fabian discovered new things about her. He watched her from the moment she woke up till the moment she went to bed. He noticed that she was a dancer, an introverted dancer, but she was trying to beat her social anxiety. Like Fabian, Camila had anxiety, but she denied her suicidal thoughts, something that impressed Fabian. Camila had a few friends that she would talk to whenever she was feeling lonely, what freaked Fabian out once was when he discovered that Camila had imaginary friends.

   She would talk to her imaginary friends a lot, Fabian sometimes would respond, as if she was talking to him. He liked those moments, it made him feel less lonely. The moments Fabian hated with Camila were when she would wish for him. He would hear her tell her imaginary friends that she wishes that her soulmate would come already, or that the reason she held on in the past was because she thought about him. Those moments made Fabian wish that he could take back what he did, but he knew he couldn't.

   One day Camila was home alone, she was watching her Asian dramas and eating her lunch. Fabian was sitting on the ground next to her watching the drama with her. The drama was about two soulmates that fought hard to be happy and to be together. Camila wasn't the quiet type when watching her dramas, she would make comments and yell during unfair moments that happen in her dramas. In one scene, one of the soulmates was crying and wanting to die, Camila pleaded: "No, please don't hurt yourself little angel, think about him, think about how much it would hurt him. Please angel, hold on."

   Fabian reacted to her words by throwing his hands in the air and saying: "I didn't know!"

   His hands flicked Camila's spoon from her plate, and even touched Camila's shoulder, which for the first time, she reacted by looking to her side. She seemed scared, she put down her plate and tablet, and asked her imaginary friends: "What was that?"

   Fabian was as surprised as Camila, he stood next to her as she was still staring at the couch she was sitting on trying to guess what happened. "It couldn't have been the wind, the windows are closed." Camila spoke in a high pitched voice, which Fabian knew she used for her girl imaginary best friend. "Well then what happened? Something flicked Camila's spoon." Camila added, this time in a deep voice, signaling that her boy imaginary friend was the one speaking. "It's probably a ghost." Camila finally laughed. "But what if it actually is a ghost?" Camila questioned in a high pitched voice. "Then I would love it if it were a dancing ghost, maybe she'll be able to help me with my grand jete." Camila joked.

   Fabian laughed at Camila's sense of humor. She would make those debates with her imaginary friends very often, and those debates would usually show Fabian how funny Camila is. "I don't know how to dance, but I know how to sing." Fabian joined Camila's joke.

   Camila must have heard him because she instantly turned and faced Fabian. "Who said that?" She asked, looking really worried.

   Fabian looked at Camila with a puzzled expression, he waved his hand in front of Camila's face but she didn't respond, so he asked: "Can you see me?"

   Camila took a step back and looked really scared: "Who are you? Where are you? Don't hurt me please, I am an only child, my parents would be lonely if I died, please." Camila reacted.

   Fabian quickly responded: "I am not going to hurt you, I wouldn't, I just want to, ah, be your friend." 

   Camila faced the mirror twenty feet away from her and laughed: "I must be losing it, hallucinating. I must be going crazy, why would a ghost want to be my friend? That's crazy, snap out of it Camila."

   Fabian insisted: "You're not crazy Camila, I am actually real, and I want to be your friend."

   Camila faced Fabian again, looking as scared as she was before, but she played along saying: "Okay Mister ghost, why do you want to be my friend? There are many people in this world, why me?"
