Jigsaw Puzzle

My dreams often feature legos. Sometimes, I stay up all night,

reading too many books,

and forget about homework until morning.

In 2005, my sister was born. I used to have arachnophobia,

but I got over it so I could walk through the forest undergrowth,

brushing against soft leaves and scratchy bark, leaving imprints

in the pine straw. But to tell the truth, dear reader, I still jump a little.

I have wild, curly blonde hair that refuses to stay neat. It is a lion’s mane.

By the way, lion’s manes can be red or black, not just blonde

to match the fur. I wish we humans

would stop slaughtering each other.

I miss Chicago, Memorial Park at dusk, and

Riding a two-story train while eating blueberries.

I remember one night at the park when we stood on the wooden bridge,

And watched as the fireflies

engulfed us. Last year, I received an Honorable Mention for my short story, and a medal

for my high score in the SAT. If I were rich, I’d want a lifetime supply of pickles,

but my mom would steal them all. I love drawing with charcoal, because it

paints the world the way I see it;

black and white, bleeding together.
