"So many."
AS Jess stands in front of Julie's studio, she can practically feel the piece of paper stuffed in her pocket burning through to her skin. Today, she had woken up happier than she's been in a long time—happy enough to force herself to see the guys. Which is where her courage ended as she can't truly bring herself to walk in, not with their legendary music playing.
Only once it pauses does she knock on the door. With each passing second, she wants to run away, but her feet stay put, even when Luke sticks his head through the door.
The boy grins and beckons her into the garage. When she steps into the studio, she is greeted by the other two boys who both wave from their instruments. "Jess!" Reggie calls, swinging his guitar over his back. "What brings you here on this lovely day?"
She chuckles as she blushes. "I just wanted to apologize for yesterday," she says, shifting her weight. "I'm just a very personal person, and it just wasn't a great day. Sorry I was a little weird."
"Eh, no problem," Luke replies as he perches himself on the couch. "We all have our days."
"Which brings me to why I'm here." Jess clears her throat. "I really, um, want to be..." She looks at each of their confused faces. "No, that's a bad way to start. When I died, I...No, that's also bad."
"It's ok," Alex says softly, probably seeing her panic. "Take your time."
Jess takes a deep breath. "You know I'm a huge fan of your music. I was actually supposed to see you guys perform at the Orpheum. My friend just told me she got us tickets, and I grabbed some ice cream and drove over to her house to celebrate." She purses her lips and shakes her head as she reaches into her pocket to take out the piece of paper. "Anyway, I planned on giving you guys a gift as a congratulations on playing the freaking Orpheum, but I never really got to give it."
As she extends the folded piece of paper to Luke who sits closest to her, her dead heart beats rapidly in her ears like it were a drum beat. He narrows his eyes as he slowly unfolds the paper—the longest moment of Jess' afterlife by far.
"I know it might be a little weird," she says quickly when his expression drops. "But I thought it might be good enough. For you guys." The other two boys walk join Luke by the couch to look over his shoulder at the drawing.
When she sees their reactions, she feels like she might cry. "You know what? I'm sorry. It's weird and probably not worth it, I—"
"Oh my god, that's us," Alex whispers as tears fill his eyes. "This is all of us."
