"I'm sorry I was a bitch."
"You're still a bitch. Just my bitch."
Justin has come up with a perfect strategy on how to avoid Julie and the boys: Carrie Wilson. It really is perfect. They don't want to interact with her, so all he does is spend time with the fallen pop star.
She had apologized for all of her selfishness a few days after the Orpheum show. It was genuine and sort of cute to see Carrie almost groveling for Justin's friendship. She didn't even mention asking him for dance ideas for Dirty Candy, never pushed him to explain anything about his friendship with Julie.
She even complimented Julie's performance, in private, of course.
So, even though he hates Trevor Wilson, he hangs with her most days at her house if only to be where no one will find them. Carrie is perceptive—he knows she knows something is wrong. He'll never be able to explain in full.
They reconciled at the cemetery—Justin had finally gathered the motivation to visit Jess' grave like he could talk to her through it, and Carrie was visiting her grandmother. Tears were shed and confessions made about their fears, mostly Carrie's.
Justin had also been working with Carrie on side projects, ways of finally showing the world who her family is.
He showed her an old Sunset Curve CD, made her listen to all the songs her father stole. He explained how his mother's best friend had her work stolen and plastered up in the gym. He made her understand it needed to be fixed.
As he waits by her locker to drive her home, he happily pulls up the breaking news article on his phone, grinning at the pictures as if they could make him genuinely happy. It may be a break from his anger about what Jess did, what his dad did, but it won't be forever.
Hence why he wishes Carrie would hurry up from her meeting with the school board.
"Hey, Justin."
Another reason he wishes Carrie could magically appear. He glances down at Julie while pursing his lips, his eyes darting the boys not far behind her, but giving her space. Clicking his tongue, he arches a brow and meets her gaze. "What?"
"Just checking in," Julie says nervously.
"About?"
"Things."
"Things are fine. Got what you needed?"
Julie drops her facade, narrowing her eyes. "Dude, what the heck? We want to help."
"Then leave me alone."
"That's not what friends do."
Justin heaves out a sigh and fully turns to Julie, once again forcing himself not to look at the ghosts. "Friends don't push. I'm not ready yet. Now, please leave me alone."
