"You tried, huh?"
"I will never forget this day for the rest of my afterlife."
AS Jess appears in front of a very geometric house, she frowns at the boys' backs. Instead of saying anything, she simply poofs in front of them with her arms crossed and her eyes narrowed. "We're friends now. I get clingy," she says as they jump back in surprise. "That means don't leave me!"
"Jess, you can't stop us," Luke says with an angry pout, though he still looks like a puppy who lost his favorite toy.
"And I'm not trying to," she replies as she glances back at the house. "I do art, you really think this is a new situation for me? He deserves whatever you decide is best. I'm just here as a chaperone, sort of."
"Chaperone?" Alex raises a brow.
"Yeah, I mean, he doesn't deserve to die," Jess says. "I'm just making sure you don't go overboard or anything. I'm not gonna stop you. That'd be rude of me."
A small smile spreads over Reggie's face that makes butterflies erupt in her stomach. She clears her throat as he nudges her side with a grin, saying, "You're awesome, you know that?"
She shakes her head. "I just think I understand a bit better than Julie or Justin."
The four ghosts step into the house to find posters of Bobby's face all over. Jess winces at the sheer ego of it all as they spread out across the rooms—Luke heads back out of view, Alex stays by the door to look at the hanging records, and she and Reggie walk to the center of the living room. "This is insane," she mutters as she spins in a circle.
As the other boys silently move through the house, she notices Reggie glancing at her from the corner of her eye before he takes a deep breath and asks, "Can I ask you something?"
She nods.
"What did you mean this wasn't a new situation?"
Jess finds herself staring ahead of her for a moment too long as a feeling of dread falls over her, like an animal waiting to pounce. With a sigh, she raises her gaze to find his and runs a hand through her hair with a wince. "Do you have that picture I gave you guys?"
He digs into his jacket to take out a folded piece of paper. "Julie helped us make copies so all of us would have one."
Her heart swells, and she has to physically stop herself from smiling as she gently unfolds the paper. "I always sign my work in the bottom right." She points to show the small JN inscribed on the page. "But I also do something in the work itself. Sort of like a signature style, but my art teachers hated it. Said it stopped me from being great because all my work flowed the same. No rhythm."
