"No leads, huh?"

"I feel like I walked in at the wrong time."

His heart weighs heavily in his chest as he walks away from the dance studio. There is an emptiness in his hand from where his letter had been previously before he had finally given it to his teacher. He expected the lecture he received about responsibilities and how he shouldn't give up.

Thing is, Justin couldn't care less. There's no joy in his dancing anymore. It feels like a burden, not an escape. Sometimes, he thinks he catches a glimpse of Jess, but it's just a trick of the light. He does not love it anymore, so why should he do it?

His teacher had asked if something was wrong. How was he supposed to tell her that his best friend has been taken hostage by his father, both of whom are dead, and it has left a hole in his heart where his joy and passion used to be? She would send him to a therapist and call him crazy.

Easier just to stop and cite junior year as stressful instead.

As he heads to the office to pick up his shadow, he catches a glimpse of Julie and Flynn by their lockers. He just puts his head down and keeps walking until he finally finds a safe haven sitting in the office.

When the door opens, he sighs as he stands, forcing a smile on his face as Principal Lessa greets him. "Justin, so good to see you. Thank you for this."

"Of course," he replies. "It's always a pleasure to show prospective students around the school. Gets me out of some tests too."

She chuckles and shakes her head. "Yes, it does. Well, here's our lucky prospect."

Justin's smile falters when he sees the girl curiously step out of Lessa's office, wide dark eyes glancing around before she sees them both. Sticking out her hand, she smiles while Lessa's introduction turns static in his ears. "Hi, it's so nice to meet you," says the girl.

Justin quickly shakes his head and smiles once more. "I'm Justin."

"Yes, Principal Lessa was telling me about you. Thank you for showing me around."

Lessa nods and clasps her hands in front of her. "Yes, well, you'll be able to see everything this school has to offer. Justin will introduce you to our music teacher, Ms. Harrison, and to the head of our STEM program as well. We look forward to having you here full-time next week."

"Well, thank you for taking me halfway through the year," the girl says, scratching the back of her neck. "I know it's a hassle."

"Don't worry about it," Justin replies quickly. "We've seen stranger stuff. What do you want to see first?"
