JESS is absolutely exhausted. She doesn't know how Zoe remains so upbeat and happy after driving around town all day and paying people for her artwork. It's tiring, and frankly, a bit humiliating, but nothing can be as bad as how she felt a year ago when she walked in on that art sale.

     That really broke her heart.

With only one last landscape to collect, Jess parks in front of the beach house with a sigh and leans her head back against the seat. The bag full of rolled-up paper at Zoe's feet eyes her warily like it knows she's debating just burning them all.

"Last one," Zoe says happily. "Last one and we're home free."

"And out seven hundred dollars," Jess sighs. "I spent so long at that ice cream shop, and it's all gone. At least Mom and Dad don't get it."

"Aw, don't frown, Jess." Zoe takes her hand and squeezes. "Think of it this way. Working at the shop gave you money, and you somehow managed to get a Sunset Curve concert every Sunday. How you managed to get them a gig is beyond me."

     "My manager liked me."

"Everyone likes you because you're a sweetheart. Now, let's get this over with so we can get some dinner. I'll pay."

Jess shakes her head with a small laugh as she steps out of the car, leaving the keys for Zoe to have some air on the warm summer day. As their senior year starts in two weeks, the two have been spending every day together because their classes differ so much. Zoe's still upset that Cody Pierce had been the one to snag Jess as a lab partner, as had been the case for two semesters now.

Though not partnered with Zoe, Jess can't help but be a bit grateful. The popular jock acts as a bigger barrier between Phoebe Williams' little group and Jess. After all, Phoebe wouldn't risk her chance with the school's star over Jess. Even if he is just using her for good grades, Jess is still relieved it's not a cheerleader.

Making her way up to the door, she knocks three times before moving away. She checks her list quickly to ensure she's at the right address and which landscape they bought: it was a later work when she experimented with color. Being mildly color blind, she's never enjoyed paints because it only exposes her weakness, but she labeled each colored pencil and went to work. It was a sunset over the water, a hill curving into the landscape from the side. That day, it seemed like the colors were a bit brighter than normal, making it just a smidge easier to distinguish blue from green or pink from yellow. She loved that piece. She gave it to her mother after overhearing their latest money issues, but it obviously wasn't appreciated.
