Getting a early start Sophia and John were off, not wanting to risk any time. John was thinking of plan after plan about how to get rid of her as fast as he could. Slow as she was he did not wanting her to see what he was up to. It was confidential and sharing his life with a complete stranger didn't sound like the smartest of choices. Although she had shared her life with him, unless she was lying. In that case he would have to find out why she was really here.
"So you said your mother left when you were young."
"Oh yes. But I am quite happy to see her."
"And you said you had a note. Could I see it?"
"Of course. But what business do you have with it?"
"None at all. I just would like to look over it." Truth was John could not read well. His mother had tried to teach him but he got frustrated quickly and choose to stop. But he did want to see the note. Sophia handed him the note without hesitation. John looked over the note trying to read it. Squinting down at the small neat print he couldn't make out one word.
"Leon? Would you like me to read it for you?" Asked Sophia being careful not to upset him.
"Please." John said sheepishly.
Fluently Sophia began the letter from her mother. Not one word was wrong as if she new it by heart. She continued on for the duration of the letter and when she was finished she folded it up nice and neat and placed it safely in her pocket.
"How did you do that?"
"Do what?"
"Read as if you have been doing it your whole life. You read better than I do and you are a female."
Blushing lightly she responded. "This is the only thing I know how to read. Father would whoop me if he knew I could read. He says its not proper and it probably is not but I still love it. Its amazing how the words can flow so beautifully onto a page and stay there for years never leaving like words spoken do. I wish I could read other things but for now this is enough."
"But how did you learn."
With pursed lips she responded with something unreadable. "I cant say."
"And why is that?"
"I made a promise and if I break it, it would be betrayal, and I am not a betrayer. "
John knowing much about being betrayed did not push the subject further. He rather kept walking, on and on until he reached town. He had a plan. And of course it had something to do with Sophia. But what could her age have anything to do with him?...
