As Mary stumbled her way home she thought about what the old women had said. Could it really be true? Carma of all things. What did she mean of it? As she rounded the corner and started to see daylight she also saw something unsettling. Fire. Black clouds of smoke rose high above her head. She could smell the foul sent as it reached her nose, burned her eyes. "But where could it be coming from?" She coughed. Just as the words were uttered from her lips she saw it. A house. Her house. Could it really be? She already knew the answer. Of course it could.
She blindly walked forward trying to find her way though the thick smoke that covered her eyes and made it impossible to breath. She walked for what felt like forever until she made it up onto the curving road in front of her now destroyed house. Standing before her were people. Not people but a mob. Assembled with weapons and torches. They stood before her- some with smirks on their faces some with hate- with there weapons pointing at her.
"What is this?" Shrieked Mary. "Please answer me." Nothing. "Have you all gone mad?"
"If anyone is to be going mad here it would be you!" Yelled a man from inside the crowd.
"Me?"
"Yes you."
"But what may I ask did I do?"
"You brought that witch upon us. Sent her to us."
"Why must you speak of such childish things at a time like this?" Inquired Mary, her voice getting shriller by the moment.
"They an't childish. Sir Samuel- a highly respecting and trusted man if I do say myself- told all of us he encountered a witch in the woods. Said that you and your mad brother knew her. Said that she was going to hurt us all."
"So we are going to be doing something about it!" Yelled another man.
"What shall I ask, do you mean?" Said Mary truly frightened now.
" I mean that we are going to take care of her before she can do anymore damage."
"Are you trying to propose to me that you will be killing her?"
"That is exactly what I am proposing."
"You call me mad! You are the ones that truly are! Thinking a poor old women like her would hurt any of you. You all should be ashamed of yourself's! You have no proof whatsoever, and you think its right and noble to go off killing a women!?"
"Like I told you before Sir Samuel told us this. And I have no right to deny him. He is a civil man." Said the man that first spoke to Mary.
"Lies! Lies all of you!" Spat Mary
"Are you trying to say that you agree with this preposterous women? That you think that she should not be killed? How do we know you are not a witch yourself? Why would we be listening to you. I bet you are just as crazy as she is!"
"Now all of you have lost your minds. I have known you all for years- some since I was a baby- and you think now that I am a witch?!"
"Yes I do. Why else would you be standing up for this, this beast of a woman?"
"I am standing up for thin women because she did nothing wrong. Nothing at all!"
"This is your last chance! If you don't back down and let us pass we will be taking you to Samuel!"
"No. I shall stand my ground." Said Mary in a firm voice. Although she was strong on the outside she was falling apart on the inside. What happened to my mother? And John? She thought.
"Suit yourself. Get em boys!"...
