When they arrived, Maven hadn't expected that there really was someone that was going to be there, waiting for him. When Cal had mentioned that there was someone who might know Thomas, Maven couldn't help but worry about how he would react. In his first letter, Thomas talked about him as if he was truly someone that somebody could love, someone as amazing as what he says in the letters. What if when they met, Thomas would be disappointed? He couldn't help but worry that it might be the case.
"Your highness," The young man in front bowed.
He was cute, to say the least. This must be Sam, he figured. He looked at his brother who nodded and with the apprentice, they left.
There was a moment of silence between them as they walked around, though Maven wasn't sure where exactly he was going. He knew that he was going to try and avoid Thomas as much as possible until he was sure he wanted to see him. After all, it was Thomas who said they shouldn't talk anymore so the chances he would be happy to see Maven would probably be unlikely.
"Would it be alright if I asked you something, your highness?" Sam asked.
"Go on," Maven shrugged, only half listening.
"Prince Cal mentioned you were looking for someone. Another apprentice like me. If you are looking for them, I can help you find your person. I know just about everyone here. That is, if you want of course." He offered.
"Maybe later." Maven said, continuing to walk around.
A while later, he noticed that Sam was still following him and normally around this time, he would get annoyed and demand that they leave, but something about Sam made Maven decide never mind. That way if he did want to see Thomas, he had someone at his disposal to meet him right away.
"Sam, was it?"
"Yes, your highness. Sam, Sam Oht." He clarified.
"Interesting, I've never heard that name before."
"Well, that could be because nobody cares to remember the names of a Red, your highness."
This took Maven by surprise, the fact that Sam talked back. He had been very kind and made sure to ask before talking before. He stared at the boy, curious about how Cal even found him.
"Sorry." He heard a mutter come out of Sam.
"Tell me, how did my brother get in touch with you? Seeing that you're an apprentice and he works with armies who are constantly fighting. Do you work closely with my brother?" Maven asked.
This gave Sam a long chuckle.
"No, your highness. It was a coincidence. I heard one of the servants from the castle talking about how Prince Cal was looking for an apprentice who worked in the frontlines. I just so happen to be there and offered myself."
Cal sent someone to try and find Thomas for me? Somehow, Maven wasn't surprise that Cal did that, but he wondered if he did that because he was sorry for him or simply because he thought it was right of him to do so.
"Alright, tell me. Do you know anyone by the name of Thomas?" He asked, even though he wasn't sure if he wanted to meet him yet.
Sam thought about it for a long time, trying to remember everyone he knew. Unfortunately for Maven, it turns out that he didn't. He watched as Sam shook his head, his expression changed from happy to sad within seconds.
"I thought you said you knew everyone here."
"Almost everyone here." He corrected.
"Right." Maven sighed, walking away, only to hear footsteps following behind.
"I can ask around if you like, I promised Prince Cal I would do anything to help. Say the word and I promise I will find him for you, your highness."
Wanting to be alone, Maven agreed. Sending Sam off to go learn more about this Thomas. In the meantime, Maven continued walking around, thinking about what he would say if he met him. He knew deep down he would be happy to see Thomas of course, but knowing that it might not be reciprocated was hard.
It also doesn't help that Sam seems to be a little too energetic for Maven.
Author's Note: Hello! Hello! Hello! It's finally in 2021! I still can't believe it. I started this in 2020 because I wanted a place where I could write freely about whatever I wanted and even though it hasn't exactly been like that. I hope to write some more soon! Depending on how things go, I might end up rewriting this and uploading that when it comes out, but to be determined! With that said, the next chapter will be the next chapter. I originally wanted this to be the last one, but it started to look a little too long so stay tuned! The next chapter will be up soon! :) With that said, everything but the story is all owned by Victoria Aveyard. Totally go check out her series Red Queen if you haven't, it's amazing!!
