I sat beside my brother in his car, leaning my forehead on the window. It was getting kinda awkward so this time, I broke the silence. "How's..." About midway through the sentence I remembered how bad at starting conversations I am "life?" My brother's quiet for a moment and I think I've fucked up when he breaks out in laughter. I look at him confused. Did I say something wrong? He finally calms down enough and turns to me. Well he was calming down until he saw my confusion and broke out into laughter again. Finally, he calmed down enough to talk.
"Was that your attempt at conversation, because in that case it's a shock that you have friends at all." I pout.
"I have friends, I even have a mate!"I whine. Guel freezes on the spot. I'm confused to why until he says
"You have a mate?" there it is. I laugh nervously.
"Yeah I never told you, sorry. Um, her name's Leah."
"Her?" He asks, his voice raising an octave. I chuckle awkwardly. Right. Never told him that.
"Yeah, I'm, um, gay?" He shrugs.
"That makes sense." I was about to protest when he said "Dad was OK with you being a mutt and was openly homophobic, so it makes a lot more sense for you to be gay than you think." I never think this through.
"I really didn't expect to come out to you this way."I chuckle awkwardly. I scratch the back of my neck and tap my foot repetitively. He laughs.
"I'm glad you admited it." and for a moment I felt, I had my brother back. Not responsible like a parent Guel, nor smoking and doing drugs out of stress Guel. No.
He was just my brother.

I grin as I walk out of the car the next day. It was finally the weekend and I could spend some time with my brother and future sister in-law. My brother said we were going to the mall but in reality, we were gonna just get Zoe some flowers and strawberries, after all, it was her birthday tomorrow. I jump out of the car and work it out with Guel.
"You get the flowers, you're a girl, you're good with these things, right?"
"Just because I'm a girl, doesn't mean I have to be good with these things."
"Ah shoot you're right, um, I'll get the flowers and-"
"I am actually good with the flowers though, so I will actually do that. Go busy yourself with the strawberries and I'll see you back here." He salutes.
"Yes ma'am" and then we split up.
I head towards the flower booth and look around a bit. I identify red roses which as I've read mean love, baby's breath meaning love and innocence and ranunculus, meaning charm and attractiveness. I throw in a bit of lavender because why not and it looks beautiful and it's meaningful. I purchase it from the booth and it's everything a girl could ask for. I meet my brother back at the rendez vous point and hand him the flowers. We head towards the car and I offer to drive. I was gonna give Zoe one more surprise. Instead of heading straight home I drive to the tailors. My brother looks at me. "Why are we at the tailors?" I grin.
"You're taking Zoe on a date." his eyes widen "I've booked a restaurant and you're getting fitted for a suit. Good luck with the lady." a huge grin spreads on his face and he hugs me.
"Thank you so much Ness." I freeze. Ness was my nickname from my brother that went with my old name. As if he realised this he pulled away with a worried look in his eyes. "Oh shoot I didn't mean to I-" I embrace him again. He looks so happy and honestly, it felt like we were a family again.
"Thank you." I whisper. And I know I meant that, even if he didn't.
Why?
Because he's my brother.
And because he's here.

I push a strand of hair out of my face and open the door to my brother and Zoe's room. "Zoe!" I yell, startling her. She laughs.
"Didn't see you there." She grins "So what're you doing in my room?"
I grin in return "Getting you ready for your date!"I strut up to her closet "C'mon, I need to pick out a dress for you." I browse through her dresses until I found one. It was a black dress bejewelled with small diamonds on the side. The skirt faded from black to blue which matched my brothers suit, which was a navy blue. She twirled around gently before I pulled out her pair of black high heels. I rummaged through her jewellery box before deciding on a silver Swarovski necklace that had a small silver swan on it which faded to blue near the bottom. The gorgeous necklace matched her dress perfectly. I admire my work as she tries it all on. She grinned and twirled once more.
"I look beautiful!" She exclaims. She looks up at me, a smile on her face. "Thank you so so so so much!" I blush.
"It's nothing."
"No" She shakes her head "It's everything." I smile and begin to walk out before I trip on a pair of boxers. I raise my brows at her. Her eyes widen. "I- I can explain-" I cut her off
"I know you guys do it a lot, being mates and all, but couldn't you clean up after?" She blushes and laughs.
"I'm sorry, I was a bit busy though." I snort.
"Doing what, fucking my brother?" she blushes even more fiercely.
"I mean-" I groan
"Ew ew ew ew. I don't wanna hear it. Shut up. Please." She laughs. I massage my temples before sighing. "Good luck on the date." Smirking, she cockily replies
"I don't need luck. I've got this." She twirls around in her heals once more. We laugh and I help her with her makeup. Damn I'm good at this girl stuff. My brother comes into the room with the bouquet and strawberries and she squeals. They walk out of the room hand in hand and I smile.
He was happy.
