The trip home is full of thoughts of hope as endless possibilities blossom in my mind. Maybe I would be ok. My thoughts were interrupted by the bus driver calling out that the bus had arrived at my stop. I got off the bus and into my apartment only to hear yelling. One I recognize immediately as Guel and the other-
Shit
"I TOLD YOU TO LEAVE US ALONE!" My brother shouts. I hear his fist hit the door.
"I just want to see her." The other person says calmly. Shit shit shit shit this is too soon. What has it been. A year or two?
He slams the table, drops of cheap beer flying in the air. "NO CHILD OF MINE WOULD EVER BE SO VILE!" He roars.
"AFTER WHAT YOU DID WHAT GIVES YOU THE RIGHT TO EVEN THINK ABOUT HER!"
His voice lowers. "Of course not. You're not even my child, aren't you. I kept you in this house even after that bitch died." He laughs cruelly. A sharp glint in his eyes.
I rest my arm on the wall, trying not to fall over. I realize I'm shaking fiercely but I can't call out. My throat tightens and I feel faint. It's like 70° out, so why am I shivering? I try to take deep breaths but they are shaky and my jaw trembles. Contrary to my shivering, sweat drips down my nose. What's happening?
"Leave. I don't want that bitch of a woman tainting my household and I don't want you even more." I look up shakely at my father, a pleading look in my eyes.
"Please!"
"Just let me in Miguel, If I want to see my daughter I will see her." My brother snorts.
"After what you've done you still have the gall to call her your daughter?"
"Get. Out." I see my brother peak around the corner. His eyes widen as our father raises his hand to smack me. I wince but Guel get's there first.
Sense comes to me and I call out the first thing that comes to mind. "Leah!" I try to yell, but it comes out hoarse and choked. I struggle to breath. I'm hyperventilating. I'm sweating and shivering and I feel like I'm freezing and in a 100° heat all at the same time. They don't notice my voice but my phone clatters to the ground getting my brother's attention.
"Oh my god Bridgette!" He pushes past our father as he comes to my aid. "What do I do, what do I do!" My father calmly looks at the situation before moving towards me. I step back in a futile attempt to distance myself.
"STOP!" Taking the blow, he yelps. I cry out, rushing towards my brother as he falls backwards from the sheer force of impact. My father may have emotionally abandoned us but this was the first time he had ever hit us. Guel was determined to make it the last time.
My brother turns back with a hiss. "You will stay away from her!" His eyebrows scrunch up and his lips purse as he looks back at me. My father's eyes are cold and calculated as he continues to approach me, shifting from Miguel to me.
"Calm her down. We still need to talk." My brother sneers, his eyes forming a glare.
"You're the one making her have-!" Their voices drone out as I try to focus on breathing. My throat is constricting and I clutch onto Miguel's arm for support. My vision is blurring. I just barely make out my brother grabbing my phone and calling someone.
"Vanessa, pack up, we're leaving pre-dawn." I look up at Guel sleepily.
"We're?"
"I'm going with you." I nod and get out of bed, pleading that I would never see this room again.
"Goodbye, Dad"
And then my vision cleared. I could breathe. It had been around 7 minutes but it felt like forever, and I was still a bit hazy. I tapped on my brother's shoulder and he turned to me, concern painting his face. "I'm okay" I mouth. He lets out a deep breath before look him in the eyes, trying to convey the question that plagued my mind. He shook his head and my heart dropped down to my stomach. He's still here. He was back at whatever inn or motel he had found before and he could find us now. He knew where we were.

I could barely sleep after and Leah instantly noticed.
Of course she did.
"You ok, Bridgette?" She asks, worriedly, leaning over her desk. I hesitate, do I tell her? Well I'm gonna have to start trusting her eventually, she is my mate after all. I sigh and shake my head before looking up, my eyes meeting hers.
"Can we talk later?" Her eyebrows furrow but she nods. Class drones on as normal as I scour my brain for words to say to her. I take a sigh as the bell rings. It's time. I walk outside the classroom where Leah is waiting for me.
"You wanted to talk?" I nod in response and take a deep breath.
"Can I stay with you?" Her eyes widen and her jaw drops.
"That's unexpected" she chuckles lightly but notices my worried expression. "Can I ask why?" I waver. Too late to turn back now I guess.
"I'm getting away."
"Oddly vague but ok." She looks me dead in the eyes. "Promise me one thing, though."
"What?"
"Promise me that you'll tell me if you feel threatened."
"I promise."
"Then let's go."

I text Miguel in advance not to pick me up and that I would be staying with a friend and I wait anxiously for Leah at the entrance of the door.
"You ready to go?"
"Yup."
"Then let's go." She nods towards the group of her pride members. Most of which I recall from the gathering.
"Bridgette!" Calls Leya, running towards us. She ruffles my hair with a wide grin, Leah growls in response. Leya just laughs.
"Possessive much?" Leah glares at her. We walk up to the group of Lions ranging from 14-18 in age and the banter picks up once more.
A bit late, I know but I had writers block. I'm writing this at school. Ah well. Happy April Fools.
