"let's talk baby shower." my mom tells me over coffee the next morning. "mom, come on. i just got pregnant. besides, nate, dillon, lia, and i all decided to have a joint shower since lia and i will be taking on pregnancy together." "how will eight people agree on enough things to plan one shower?" she asks. "i'm sorry, eight people?" "yes. you, nate, lia, dillon, their mothers, me, and kami." she lists like it's obvious. "mother, that is not the list of people planning this shower. i'm sorry, but lia and i are planning everything ourselves, aside from the guest list which we will make with the fathers of our children." "will you have separate gender reveal parties, at least, so kami and i can plan it for you?" "you mean with us?" i raise an eyebrow. "sure, honey. whatever you want, as long as kami and i get to help with your gender reveal party." "i never even said we were having a gender reveal party, you did. nate and i haven't discussed a gender reveal party." "oh, nathan!" she calls out, causing him to walk into the kitchen. "what can i do for you, gen?" he smiles. "my sweet mia has just informed me that you're having a joint baby shower and haven't discussed a gender reveal party?" "yeah, i don't think we're going to have one." he informs her. "but you have to. when i had my gender reveal for mia, i was overjoyed. i chose to be surprised and trusted your aunt carrie to take the results directly to the bakery to have a cake made, and when i cut that cake open and saw pink, i cried. tyler was a nightmare, i just knew i couldn't handle another son." nate and i stifle a laugh as she mentions tyler. "we haven't even decided if we want to know the gender when it's time." i point out. "we do, don't we?" nate asks. "i'd kind of like it to be a surprise." i admit. "you really think you could handle that? baby, i'm sorry, but you can't even let a surprise party be a surprise. remember last year when you tricked madison into telling you what we were planning for your birthday by pretending you already knew about it?" he replies, causing my mother to laugh. "that is exactly my point. you're impatient, mia. with a gender reveal party, you get to be surprised without having to wait until the baby comes." "she's got a point." nate agrees, shrugging his shoulders and shoving his hands in his pockets. "yes! so, we're doing it?" i deadpan, running my hands over my face. "mother," i finally speak, "i understand you're excited to be a grandmother, but at the end of the day this is our child. nate and i will discuss this in private, like normal married couples do, and the two of us will make a decision together. just because you're talking nate into being on your side, doesn't mean it's set in stone. i am still the mother of this baby." "mia, i'm aware. i just want kami and i to throw you two a party for the baby, and i wish i'd done a gender reveal with tyler and nora as well because yours was so much fun. i just really want you to have that experience." she explains as she grabs my hand. i sigh in defeat, "okay, mom, we can have a gender reveal party." "yay! oh, i can't wait to start planning!" she hurriedly stands up from the table, "nora, your sister said yes! grab my purse, we're going to the mall!" "wh- now? mom, we won't know the gender for at least 12 weeks." "honey, it is never too early to start planning a good party." "well, have fun, gen. our little one is going to love her grandma very much." nate smiles, placing his hand on my stomach. "one vote girl. mia, what do you think you're going to have?" "i'm not sure yet. though, nate had a dream the baby was a girl, so he firmly believes we will have a girl." she smiles, "you two will be fantastic parents. i love you both so much." "thanks, mom." i grin as i hug her. "you're welcome, sweetheart." she kisses the top of my head. "you wouldn't give me that love if i had a kid." tyler mumbles, causing nora to nod in agreement. "the two of you are my oldest, unwed, and don't have yourselves together. mia and nate have tried to have a baby since they got married, they own a house, and the baby already has a sizable trust fund. they are everything i wasn't for all of you." "mom, don't say that." i demand softly. "yeah, we know you did your best." nora adds, giving her a hug. "especially after dad died." tyler rubs her back, "you were strong, mom."
