I woke up dazed. I couldn't shake the dream from my head. Meanwhile, a white haze danced around my eyes, making it difficult to make out the surroundings. I groaned and panicked, realizing where I was and that I had to work. I attempted to throw the sheets off me, which was a lot more difficult because they were padded with sweat. I showered, brushed my hair and dressed as quickly as I could and was soon on my way to work.
I luckily made it in right on time for my shift, so my boss couldn't say anything. Not that she would anyway, she was too nice. It wasn't long into my shift when I heard my stomach grumbling—I had forgot to grab breakfast."You should really get better about making sure you eat in the morning." The voice rang familiar in my ears.
I snapped my attention to the voice. I could pick that voice out of a sea of voices. It was as soft as sea foam washing on the shore. It was as silky as chocolate. It was Jake's.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, trying to limit the amount of emotion in my voice.
I wanted to kiss him, tell him that I loved him. Tell him I wanted more for him, for us. I couldn't though. I had made my decision and it was better for the both of us.
"Jita told me you worked here and I had been meaning to check this place out anyway." He said.
"Well, uh, what can I get you?"
"Um," he said, examining the board "two medium lattes & two lemon poppyseed muffins."
"Okay." I said, typing the codes into the cash register.
My head was spinning. He was ordering for two. I should have known that he'd have moved on by now. It wasn't like we were engaged or anything. He had every right to. So why was I absolutely gutted? Why did my heart rise to my throat? I could feel my blood pumping in my ears.
"Your total is $8.94" I said.
He handed me a $10, and put the change into the tip jar for me.
"I never wanted you to leave, you know." He said, quietly.
"I know. It was for the best though."
"For who?"
"You."
He scoffed, "I haven't stopped thinking about you. I can't stop thinking about you. I don't want to either."
"Jake..."
"No, Freya, listen to me. You're always on my mind."
"Jake, can we please not do this here? I'm working." I said, pleadingly.
I was half astonished and half pissed off. He would really just order coffee for his girlfriend and then talk to me like that. He had no right.
"Can we meet somewhere tonight? When do you get off work?"
"Jake..."
"Please, Freya."
I sighed, "I'm off at 4"
"Okay, meet me at Chevelle's at 6?"
I nodded. I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into but I was curious, for the most part, to hear what he had to say. At least we would be in a public space, a bookstore, so a scene couldn't be made. He headed over to the pick up counter without another word, and left after he got his coffee. My eyes followed him even as he left the shop. I was mystified and I hated it.
"He left this for you." Rae said, breaking me out of my daze.
The coffee and the muffin.
