"We can't turn into bats or wolves, just so you know, but we're pretty fast and strong."
"I've noticed." I murmured, remembering Dimitri in my room.
"Hello." Drea suddenly appeared out of nowhere. I shuddered, but she didn't notice. "Are we ready to go?"
"Yeah."
"Great." Drea smiled playfully at me.
"Try not to fall behind." and then she was gone.
"Come on." Vera urged me, and then she disappeared, too.
Panicking, I started to run as fast as I could. I didn't know exactly how fast I was running until I had blown past Vera and Drea. Instinctively I froze, and waited for them to catch up with me.
"Sorry." I said when they had.
"It's all right." Vera told me. "We tend to run slowly, anyway."
This time I ran slower with them. Though I would never admit it, I was amazed and thrilled by how fast I could run.
Pretty soon we made it to a nearby town.
"Keep to the trees." Drea told me. I nodded.
"I'll go first." Vera offered, and she leaped into the window of a nearby house. After a few minutes, I heard a loud ( at least to me) snap. Vera stuck her head outside the window and nodded.
"Come on!" Drea urged me, and she took my hand and jumped up to the window, pulling me along with her.
Once inside, I saw that Vera had already drained a man on a bed.
Ignoring the slightly nauseated feeling, I asked Vera, "How many people do we have to drink to be fully fed?"
"It depends on their size." she explained. "This guy was about my size, so I'm pretty full. If I had drunk the blood of a child, I probably would've had to feed on a couple. Try to stick to people your size, though, so that we don't have to kill as many people. I'm done for the night."
After Drea had fed, she and Vera helped me find a victim. I didn't like that I had to kill people, but I had denied my thirst for too long now. If I didn't get something to eat-drink-soon, I would go insane with thirst.
We quickly ran to another nearby house, and we snuck through the window again.
"Now, remember what I told you?" Drea asked me.
"Just snap the neck and suck dry." I answered. "I don't know. Is it really necessary to kill them? Can't I just drink enough blood that they'll fall asleep?"
"No! They'll remember what happened, and Dimitri ordered that there be no witnesses, so just drink so that we can leave. We're late."
I sighed. "Fine."
I slipped into the nearest bedroom to find a young man a little taller than me. He would have to do. My thirst was starting to creep up on me.
I crept to his bed and put my hands around his throat. His eyes fluttered open, and then they were abruptly filled with panic. He reached under his pillow and held up a crucifix.
I hissed in disgust and shrank back against the wall. A little voice in my subconscious was wondering why I was reacting like this. I had been raised a Catholic. But another voice in my immediate consciousness was screaming in shock, fear, and anger at this sudden danger.
The young man advanced, now holding a wooden stake. I cowered against the wall, shrieking in protest as he grabbed my leg and dragged me towards him, careful to avoid my hands, which were clawing at him. I had by now completely lost control and gone into full vampire survival mode.
Taking careful aim, when I lurched around to rip off his face, he quickly stabbed me with the stake, and then all I felt, saw, heard, and felt was empty, painful blackness.
