I awoke to a strange clicking sound.
I sat up on the table, listening carefully. A few seconds later the large double doors swung open. Drea and Vera were standing in the doorway. Drea had a bag with her, full of something.
"Come on, hurry." Drea whispered.
I obediently ran with them all they way to the library.
"We're just going to get straight to the point." Drea said. "We went hunting yesterday and saw Darius. There's a cure to being a vampire. "
"Oh God." I gasped in relief. "We're going to be human again?"
"Only you and Drea." Vera corrected me. "I'm staying here with Dimitri."
"Oh." I realized that I would never see Vera again. I had come to really like her.
"Okay, back to the point." Drea broke the silence. "Vampires are created by humans being sucked almost dry, but with just enough to keep them alive. Then vampire blood is put into the bloodstream, converting the remaining human blood. To become human again, it's the opposite."
"So that means that Vera is going to suck us almost dry, and then we have to drink human blood?" I concluded.
"Yes." Vera said.
"But where do we get the human blood?" I asked.
Drea opened the bag and pulled out a huge ass jar full of blood. "There's enough for both of us."
"Where did you get that?" I asked, shocked and dumbfounded.
"Darius looted the charnel houses." Vera explained.
"Oh." I made a face. Yuck.
"Okay, we have to hurry if we want this to work." Drea started pulling out jars of blood. I hadn't hunted in days, so I was desperate for a taste of the blood.
"I'll go first." Drea said.
"This will be painful." Vera warned her.
"I'm ready." she clutched an opened jar of blood in her hand, and she was now sitting in an armchair. She was trembling.
Vera bent down and bit Drea's neck.
Drea screamed, but didn't push Vera away. Vera kept drinking until Drea was almost unconscious. She pulled back, but Drea didn't have the strength to drink the blood.
I took the jar and poured the blood into her mouth, and she managed to swallow all of it.
After three more jars of blood, Drea fell unconscious. Vera and I waited anxiously, and then we heard a beating heart.
"It worked!" Vera cheered.
"Yes!" we high-fived.
"Okay, your turn now, Alivia." Vera said.
I collapsed into another chair. "I'm ready."
Vera bent down and bit my neck.
It felt like two razor sharp, thin knives had pushed their way into my neck. It was so painful that I screamed just like Drea did.
I began to feel drowsy after a couple minutes, and Vera backed away. I opened my mouth and swallowed mouthful after mouthful of blood with all the strength I had left until I was pulled under into an ocean of darkness.
I woke up in the same chair, Drea still in her armchair. Her eyes were open wide in wonder, her hand on her chest. She was feeling her heartbeat, something she thought she would never feel again.
I put my hand to my chest to feel my own heart beat. It throbbed against my ribs. It was the most beautiful feeling in the world.
Then I felt the place where I had been stabbed. There was no small bump anymore. I pulled my shirt up to only see a white spot. It must've healed during my transformation.
Vera was standing in front of us. "I hate to break the joyful silence, but it's almost sunset. Dimitri will be waking up."
"Oh! That's right! We have to get out of here!" Drea jumped up, and we walked to the great doors that made the entrance into the castle.
It took awhile for us to reach the village. Once there, we saw Darius lean out his window and wave to us. I waved back.
We snuck into the house and stayed in Darius room.
I turned to Vera. "Well, I guess this is goodbye."
"Yes." she hugged me, and then Drea. "Goodbye."
"Goodbye." Drea and I murmured, and Vera disappeared out the window.
