I awoke from a peaceful sleep to a knocking at the door. I got slowly out of bed and opened the door.

There was a young girl of about thirteen there, with long, curly, light brown hair and a spray of freckles over her nose. She was smiling shyly.

"I brought your dinner, miss." she held out the two trays she was carrying. They were heaping with delicious food that smelled like heaven.

"Thank you...?"

"Vittoria." she said, still shy.

"Thank you, Vittoria."

She left, and I put the trays on a coffee table, then went back to close the door, only to see Darius.

"Hello." he greeted me, and walked in, closing the door after him.

"Hi."

I woke Drea up so that she could eat her dinner. She groggily sat up. "Ugh, can you bring it over here? I'm sorry, but I'm way too tired to get up."

"Sure." I went back over to the coffee table, picked up the tray, and gave it to Drea.

I turned back to see Darius still standing by the door, leaning against it.

"You eat while I talk." he offered.

"Okay." I sat down in a chair by the coffee table and started to eat.

"You and Drea will be trained to defend yourselves against vampires, starting tomorrow. That is, if you want to."

"Yeah." I said.

"Sure." Drea mumbled.

"Then please meet me in the library tomorrow after lunch. Be sure to wear the right clothes." he smiled. "I'm warning you, it'll be brutal."

"Oh well." I shrugged. "Isn't that life?"

"True." he was still smiling. He glanced at his watch, then frowned. " I have to go. I'll see you tomorrow."

"Oh, okay. Bye."

"See ya." Drea said from her bed. She had finished her dinner and left the tray on the nightstand. She looked like she would be asleep again in a few seconds.

I finished my dinner, them crawled back into bed, where I immediately fell asleep and into a dream.

I was in a dark forest. I couldn't see the sun through the gray skies. Fog was everywhere, as were crows.

I heard a twig snap behind me.

I jerked around, and my heart nearly stopped from fear.

Dimitri.

He slowly walked up to me. He held his hand out, as he had in the dungeon the other day. I backed away from him, but he kept walking towards me until he had me with my back against a black tree.

"Alivia." he whispered, and stroked my cheek. I jerked away, and hit my head on a stub of a thick branch sticking out of the tree.

"Ow!"

I opened my eyes and rubbed he back of my head. I was on the floor, a bump rising on the back of my head. I must have fallen off the bed and hit my head on the nightstand.

Then I remembered the nightmare.

I started trembling. I was too scared to stay awake by myself, and terrified to go back to sleep.

And then it hit me: Dimitri had found us.

I lurched off the floor and looked out the window. Everything was dark and quiet. Still, even with Drea asleep on the other bed, I was too scared to feel alone.

I ran to the door and loomed out into the dark hallway. No one was awake.

I remembered that Darius had said his room was the last door in the next hallway.

I closed the door and saw that the next hallway was to my right. I walked down it until I reached the door at the very end.

I raised my hand to knock, but I saw that the door was already open a crack. Gently nudged it open enough so that I could walk in.

I looked around and saw Darius standing by the window, looking out at the moon.

I approached him. "Darius?"

He looked back at me, looking surprised, but then he smiled. "Why are you awake?"

I paused, not sure I should tell him, but I promised him that I would tell him whenever Dimitri called to me.

"Dimitri can't touch me inside these walls, right?" I whispered.

His face fell. "What happened?"

"He sent me a dream. He...." my voice trailed off.

Darius his hands on my shoulders. "I promise that Dimitri can't touch you as long as you are inside these walls."

I nodded, reassured.

"Now, did you bring your stake?"

"Oh." I remembered it still in the room. "No."

"You have to get used to having it with you at all times." he said firmly.

"I know. I'm sorry."

He let his arms drop to his sides and turned back to the window.

I felt a need to be close to him. I inched forward until I was right behind him.

"Darius?"

He looked back at me.

"I...I can't explain this feeling. I want to be wherever you are. I want you to care about me. I think...."

"What?"

"Never mind."

He studied me for a second, and then said, " You should get some sleep. You have training tomorrow."

"Okay." I walked back to his door, a little sad. I was hoping that I could have gotten my feelings cleared up, but now I was only even more confused.

"I'll come to your room in the morning." Darius called after me.
